Anyone have all the EVH amps? the 50,the 100 and 100s? the combos?

Why did you buy all of them? is there enough difference to merit the purchase?

And will you buy the lunchbox evh ?and the soon coming marshall one?

I've got two Peavey 5150 heads and two matching 4x12 slant PV cabs. As well as a 5150 III 2x12 combo. I remember when the 5150 II came out. Had a better footswitch and less hiss were the biggest points. Also a slightly better rhythym channel. Called clean which it is not. Anyway it was a slight improvement. Slightly revoiced if you ask me. The 5150 III is a pretty big improvement. It's worth the upgrade to the III. Better in every way. Good cleans which the other two never had. Great rhythm/blue channel. And the red channel is classic 5150 all day, but better. That said I still love my old PV 5150 and would play any size gig tomorrow with it. Big or small. Guess my point is is you like the 5150 all three are good. 5150/5150 II are exactly the same as the 6505/6505+ heads.

I was thinking about the differences in the 5150 III series recently. Might merit its own thread.

I have the 50, the 100, and the 100 Stealth. I have no combos. I like heads not combos. Each of the three amps have different characteristics that I like.
And more than likely I will get the lunchbox.
The only one of em I tested drove was the 50. I only played it about 10 minutes and was sold. The other two I bought new from Sweetwater.
I love guitar gear. It is an addiction.

Its been a long week for me. I'll try to go into detail about the differences of the amps tomorrow.

Man you guys have a lot of dough to afford that shit. Jealous. I have a Peavey 5150 head I bought used in 1996. That's all I've played for nearly 20 years.

I'm VERY interested in this classic Marshall tone one Ed is working on. I really think I'll want that.

Yep, the Marshall tone amp is really the one I'm dreaming about. Lunchbox--ehh, not so much.

Ive owned all of them except the stealth head. Started with the 5150 block letter head in 92, got the combo in 95, "signature" head in 97, 515011 in 99 I think. The peaveys are great tanks/workhorse/one or two trick pony amps. The combo had the best tone for me out of all of them, in fact I used to play all night on the rhythm channel with the crunch button in and it was amazing sounding with all the gain I needed but it was a backbreaker! People will tell you along with Peavey reps that there is no difference between the first block letter 5150 heads and later ones but I disagree, the best sounding 5150 I ever had was the very first one I bought and other block letters Ive heard have the same extra punch and sizzle. 515011 was a weird sounding amp to me, had the same type of gain as the original but more muddy and middy sounding

fast forward to 2011, I got the EVH 100 watt head, EVH 50 head. 50 head blows the 100 watt away tone wise, forget the shared first two channels, who cares? none of us buy this amp for a clean sound so whatever. The 50 watter has about twice the gain in the blue channel ( confirmed by Howard Kaplan at EVH himself) and a tighter, punchier more cutting red channel. Its also way smaller and more portable and volume wise any tube amp over 30 watts is plenty loud so the 100 watt is overkill in most applications. The EVH amps have a hotter/tighter/cleaner sounding gain than the peaveys. I recently got the 50 watt 112 EVH combo and love it. I played a VH tribute show last week with it and was on the blue channel about 90% of the time with all the tone I needed. Played the stealth head at NAMM and its basically the 50 watt circuit in a 100 watt format if that makes sense. So, IMO the king of all EVH amps in History (so far) is probably the EVH/fender 50 watt head or combo...

Now.....this new EL34 amp based off of "the" plexi is the amp people have been dreaming about for decades and could likely knock all of these off the mountain top, but then again the 50 watt blue channel and a good set of hands will get you to 95% of any classic EVH tone you want, which at stage volume will sound like 100%

This is a timely thread, as I'm tired of hauling my 5150III 100w head + 2x12 to gigs. I'm considering the 50w head + and 1x12 for smaller gigs or the 1x12 combo, but keeping my 2x12 for when it's needed. Keep the info coming, guys!

I've owned a few of the original 5150 heads , as well as a couple of the Peavey 2x12 combos .

Very interested in the new 'Marshall' sounding prototype ...

Word on the street from EVH engineering is that it won't be a Plexi type circuit, but a high-gain EL34 based circuit.

I.e. It'll probably be a modified 5150 III Channel 2 with EL34s. Which is a great starting point.

Ugh. I was afraid of this. Part of me is disappointed. I was really hoping they took a Marshall based plexi super lead type amp and did what Ed said. Found a way to add sustain and maybe power scaling. Another part of me is still excited. If the 5150 III blue channel with 6L6s does a pretty good impression of a Marshall here's to hoping adding EL34s adds the chunk percussive Marshall edge. Like 1984 or his classic live tone.

Anybody own or play the PV 6534? Wonder if it does a good Marshall sound?

The strangest and toughest thing to swallow, for me at least, is that the very things I love about Eddie's Marshall tone come along with elements that he apparently hates. Mainly, it lacks ridiculous sustain.

Listen those Guitar Hero rips. It's a warm, squishy yet tight sound, but only sustains by shaking the strings, a jacked power tube section, and mixing board compression.

I get it. I understand that at his age he wants to hit a note, stare out at the crowd, and have it ring out for 10 seconds without doing any left hand vibrato. It just sucks that it sounds as if he has disdain for that original tone.

Ultimately, I think whatever it was HE liked about it, isn't necessarily what I liked about it. I'll never know, obviously. And he shouldn't give a sh*t about me, lol.

And I hate his 1st album tone, so who knows which specific tone he's describing when he says the Fender engineers "blew my mind".

VH II blows my mind. 1984 blows my mind. WACF blows my mind. I'm starting to wonder if it was really Don Landee who blew my mind.

NINJA EDIT: if the Fender engineers have truly found a way to harness that tone, but with only adding sustain, and not pre amp distortion, I'M ALL IN!!!

NINJA EDIT 2: ok, more distortion & gain is fine too, so long as it's not buzzy, sterile, or cold.

The 50 watt is NOT the Stealth circuit. Not even close.
