    Default Can't Stop Loving You

I find it odd that, if you judge by YouTube view count, which, in this day and age I'd say is a pretty good barometer, "Can't Stop Loving You" appears to be the most popular VH song, if you don't count "Eruption." There are a few CSLY videos with many millions of views, and if you add them together, then yeah, that song seems to resonate with the most people. I notice that many of the comments on the CSLY videos are in foreign languages, so maybe that's why. Was it a really big hit overseas? Because it sure as hell wasn't played in the United States.

I don't know about "no US air play". It got quite a bit of air play in my town.
If true I'm not surprised. The pop songs always get more attention cuz they crossover and grab people who aren't necessarily fans.

Never looked at it that way.
As for radio airplay, I can't remember the last time I heard it.

the song charted well at the time, the video got played on MTV a bit (overall MTV really stopped playing VH vids for the most part by 1995 but they would still do specials on the band which never made any sense to me).

I think it was up to like number 34 on the singles charts in the summer of 95, it was a top rock radio song over the summer as well.

it charted well, it got ALOT of radio play where I'm from, in fact DTM, CSLY, Amsterdam, Aftershock and feelin' all got played on a decent basis

I've never seen the video, and honestly, and this is not a jab, as Balance is one of my favorite VH albums, but I fucking hate this song.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

it is what it is. It's not my favorite VH song by any means and honestly I think Balance would have been better off without it but Fairburn wanted a pop song and this is what they produced.

there are parts of it where they sound fantastic, there's a part after the solo where it kind of sounds like Sam just singing over Al's drums with some backing vocals and I really like that part....the rest of it is "ok" at best.

the video is ok, not great it's well done.

I kind of think it would have worked better had Ed just played an acoustic for it instead what he did play but that's something I was just thinking of so who knows?

For me, it is just not a Van Halen song. I know, I know.

It sounds like something that the new version of DLR should be slip sliding and hand jiving too, not something that belongs on Balance.

I've also never liked bands, especially Van Halen, specifically sitting down and writing something for the sole purpose of getting pop airplay. It just feels contrived. I know most won't agree with that, but that is how I feel about it.

oh, I agree with the contrived part 100%. I think something like Take Me Back would have suited that purpose fine and that song came about naturally in the writing process (at least that's how I remember it) and it's a cool little tune. they had enough material on the record without CSLY you that was radio friendly without adding that to the mix....they didn't need a pop song for FUCK and it did just fine.

Not Enough could have been a huge radio hit had it been marketed better IMHO, Take Me Back could have easily been put out there instead of CSLY.

I just hate that CSLY was on BOV1 and BOBW...it's not one of the best songs the hagar era produced...not even close.

Oh I agree with you 100%. They should've given this song to Bon Jovi or Poison. Most certainly is not a VH song and contrived for a hit makes it even worse. The one song I truly hate from that era.

But I won't deny it's a perfectly written power/pop/ballad that casual rock fans would eat up, just shouldn't be on a VH album.

I'm a VH die hard and I don't mind the song at all . Just another layer in their songwriting repertoire .
Eddie doesn't follow rules . That should be apparent to most on here ... Ha !

If the guys wanted it on the album , then that's why it's there . There's nothing contrived about it .

I never had a problem with it either. I don't have a problem with How Many Say I. It sucks, but I don't have a problem with it. Van Halen has an incredible repertoire of absolutely phenomenal songs. Probably more consistently mind blowing than any other group. A few turkeys are inevitable.

And for what it is, I Can't Stop Loving You is an okay song.

Agreed . There are certain tunes from the Dave era that I skip over too . Same goes for the Sam and Gary albums .
Just don't understand the hate for CSLY on Balance , when songs like Not Enough or Take Me Back (for example) get off easy ?

    To each their own .
At the end of the day , it's just another topic that's been 'forumed' to death ...

I don't hate it, I think it's a well crafted song and I think Sam sings pretty well on it, I love the backing vocals etc.

I just don't like the fact that fairburn specifically asked them to write a pop song, that's the only reason for me. if it had come about organically in the writing process I would have no issue with it.
