    Default "Unchained" effects pedals demo

I'm getting into teaching my son the particulars of "Unchained" and how critical the effects pedals are on each part. I got inspired and put this quick video together. I don't have his branded pedals, but this is how I get as close I can with what I have.

    That was really cool !!!

Didn't realise Ed used an octave pedal in there , but his was obviously lower in the mix . These pedals are in front of your amp , and the amp itself is giving the gain ?

    Default "Unchained" effects pedals demo

Listen to the isolated guitar track on YouTube. It's on the end too.

Yes, I have it split to two pretty old Crate practice amps, the gain is right on the amp.

On the recording, I think he varied the level between the solo and the outro, but I'm pretty sure that they were both done in the same sweep. I would say the Octave is louder on the outro than the solo -- the isolated track like Brett says really reveals the whole thing. I love that that exists.

I'll have to look that up again , Brett . Thanks
Either way , Kevin - nice video !

To be honest , I wasn't thrilled with the 'Unchained' button on his signature flanger , and other than the looks and LED's , wasn't happy with the sweep of the EVH wah . The EVH Phase 90 is cool though .
You got great results with those standard boxes .

Kevin gets a great lower budget version of the sounds that Ed got on the record here. The original recording's octave sounds and chorus sounds were actually from the Eventide Harmonizer, but none of us mortals could have afforded the real Eventide H910 or H949 models back in 1981. I just got an Eventide H9 Core and Kevin's video has inspired me to tinker around with the Eventide sounds for "Unchained" and "Hear About It Later" and the other songs from Fair Warning that use Harmonizer. It wasn't the first Van Halen record to use the Eventide (that was probably Van Halen II, the most obvious example being the overdubs on "Dance The Night Away") but Fair Warning was the first Van Halen record to make it a major part of the core sound.

The cool thing that Kevin points out here that is almost more important than what the actual effects are is when to use them. Ed really kicked in the Flanger as a rhythmic accent...it wasn't just a gimmick, it was a rhythmic musical statement, every bit as brilliant as The Edge or Johnny Marr. Even using the Phase 90 during the bridge was perfect for the change of feel and the sleazy nature of the breakdown.

Kevin ably proves that Ed wasn't just some idiot banging on the noise boxes like a gorilla. He really was musical with his effects...and most guitar players from the 70s were not. Most guitar players just kicked on the Phase 90 and left it on back then. Excellent demo Kevin!

I really like the way Unchained sounds tuned a full step down instead of a half-step.

I need to get myself a chorus and phaser. I have the EVH flanger, a Dunlop crybaby wah, and a boss OC-3. That's all I have in the pedal department right now, I guess that's because I have a modeling amp (Mustang III). I find I'm able to get an amazing tone out of this, but it's not pushing air like I'd like so I might get a cab.

On a related note, has anyone tried the MXR Micro Flanger? If so, is it usable for VH stuff? I'm thinking about picking one up, along with a Carbon Copy, when I'm in NYC later this month.

I own both , although I have the CC listed for sale locally . Neat pedal , yet I'm just too fond of digital delays ...

The micro flanger is cool however . I can approximate the HAIL sound by setting the rate at about 40 % and the regen on full . It sounds really good for lead lines and accents too , like Ed uses . Not as pronounced as a 4 knob flanger , but the gist is there with a smaller footprint to boot

That's cool, I always thought the "sweeping" effect in the chorus of the song was a phasor, not a flanger. Didn't realize he was using both.

    Thanks for showing this man!
I knew Ed used an octave divider on FW. You proved it here. Pretty sure it's on STIL too. I got in an argument with a buddy who swore it was just Ed doubling tracks perfectly as he said in interviews. Sounds great.
