this thread is gonna blow up. WHy? All because of this answer:

Q: You just released Van Halen’s first live record with Dave, “Tokyo Dome in Concert.”

A: We were trying to figure out what to do since we didn’t have time to put a studio record together.

[My son Wolfgang] is working on his own project. Dave is off doing his thing. What I originally wanted to do was remix the original 25 song demos. That would have been really cool. But the tapes are lost. They are gone. So that was out the window.

Then we started digging through bootlegs from the club days. We tried our best to make those sound good, but ultimately it wasn’t good enough to put out. The quality of the recording was so bad that we tried to enhance them and make them better. Once we made them better, you lost that fly-on-the-wall aspect of it. It just didn’t jive. So we decided, “How about a live record?”

I would've taken those bootlegs. Hell he can have my copy of the original demo. A good engineer could make those sound really good…. DAMN!

This thread will be 50 pages by tomorrow night.

But geez, they couldn't get a decent 2nd generation source for the demos? My head is starting to spin thinking about the half worked on stuff they just told us they abandoned!

Well, that's just about the simplest, most informative VH-related interview I've read since the Esquire and Guitar World pieces back in 2012. Direct questions, direct answers.
"There will always be a Holyfield or a Tyson, but there's only one Mohammad Ali. There will always be a new body building champion, but there's only one Arnold. And there's only one David Lee. I'm the fun in Van Halen, always will be." - David Lee Roth

    Default BINGO

Q: Will there ever be another Van Halen studio album?

A: After this touring cycle, we will probably hunker down and do a studio record. We certainly have enough material. It is a matter of timing and getting everybody together. That’s the only way it can be done.

We put out [“A Different Kind of Truth”] in 2012. But then you go onstage and play those new songs, and the audience looks at you like, “What’s this?” They really want to hear the classics.

"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

    Also:

Q: How are things between you and David Lee Roth these days?

A: He is always off doing his own thing. Getting tattoos in Japan. He’s got an apartment over there. He’s got an apartment in New York. The relationship has always been the same, really. Just because he quit back in 1985 to pursue a solo career, the press I think made a bigger to-do out of our relationship being sour than we did, you know what I mean?
Translation: "We get along. We don't sleep in bunk beds or ride a tandem bicycle to gigs, but we respect each other. Sometimes we might get on each other's nerves and argue, but it's never the end of the world and generally things are all right."

Ultimately, if Dave doesn’t want to sing them, then we can’t do them. I would love to throw in “Drop Dead Legs” and “Light Up the Sky.” All kinds of stuff. I think it would be a treat for the audience. Maybe we can convince him this time around

    Please, please.

Great stuff here. I suspected they may have spent a lot of time working on something that they simply couldn't make work. Frustrating about the demos but it's so satisfying just to hear him answer all this stuff. Really interesting.

Interesting that Dave is the one that chose the Tokyo Dome show. Me, I'd have chosen the 3/1/12 MSG show. They were all on fire from what I've seen, Dave included.

Almost exactly what he said in 2010 about the BOBW songs. People said it was because they weren't any good. Maybe not, but that's beside the point, almost the whole audience is no longer receptive to new music by old bands. And I hate that.

What's really funny is that people here were saying they put out Tokyo intentionally to make Dave look bad. And now we know HE chose it, hahahaha!

One theory this busts wide open is the idea that he was totally against releasing older material that had Mike on it. If they worked on old club recordings and Ed's idea was to release the demos, that argument goes out the window.

This bodes well for us all, potentially.
