Default EVH got a Million for Beat it solo?

Has anyone every heard anything like this?
Former Manager of Guns N Roses Doug Goldstein was interviewed about the feud between Slash and Axl and made the claim (excerpt follows):

"Goldstein revealed to Rolling Stone Brazil that the fight stemmed from Slash agreeing to perform in concert with the King of Pop. “In 1991, we were on the road, and Slash went to my office and said ‘I’ll be leaving tomorrow to play with Michael Jackson on a tribute concert.’ I told him not to do it because Axl was molested by his father when he was two and he believed the charges against Michael Jackson. Everyone knew Eddie Van Halen received $1-million to play in “Beat It.” So, I asked Slash, ‘How much are you receiving?’ and he said, ‘I’ll just get a big screen TV."

All I've ever heard is that Eddie did the solo for free.

Every story I've ever heard was that he did it for free.

    Hmmm.

That would be a lot of money for a guitar solo in 1983. It would probably make it the best paid guitar solo in the history of music. Not really buying this, the amount doesn't sound right.

Considering the $1,500,000 the band got for the US Fest, yeah it is a touch high. lol

So I snooped around a bit. Most places repeat the story of doing it for free, or according to the CNN story two years ago, possibly a 6-pack of beer.

The Thriller video in its entirety cost $1 million in 1983 dollars. According to the BLS, that's $2,356,646.59 in 2015 dollars. So to spend that much to get Eddie Van Halen on the record and not promote that it's him on the record seems kind of insane. Plus, didn't Van Halen get $1 million to play the US Festival in 1983?

That said, I did find a few examples of people repeating the million dollar story. In 2013, "UberFacts" tweeted EVH did it as a favor, and one of the responses was "Bollocks, he got $1 million for it." It's not anyone seemingly 'in the know,' but it's another instance of someone saying the same number. I can't find any other evidence of that story other than the former GnR manager now.

But in reading the story, it's such an inconsequential detail, so why would he include it if it weren't something he believed? Besides, I hate to say it, but the EVH I know now isn't a great truth teller, so it wouldn't surprise me if he lied about doing it for free, but actually got some money out of it. The EVH I know now likes to get paid. Besides, the "free" story was obviously a better story.

So maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Eddie brought 2 six packs of beer and laid down two solos (for free) , as a favor to MJ , who was a friend of Val's .

He's always mentioned not getting or wanting money for the session . Also that perhaps MJ could 'repay' him by giving dance lessons ... LOL
Apparently the band (particularly Roth) felt that Ed had been 'used' , and was a 'complete fool' to play without receiving payment ...

I've only ever heard Ed's version of the story, but I've always felt like Ed must have gotten something for it even if it was just a nominal amount. I'm sure contractually there would have to be something done to make sure Ed or his people couldn't make any claims later on that they were owed for it.

Did MJ or Quincy Jones ever tell their version of how it went down?
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

The million dollar thing is definitely bollocks. Common sense dictates that if MJ agreed to pay this amount, they'd at least promote it by, you know, actually putting EVH in the liner notes.

"Ok Edward, here's the deal. We'll give you the million, but you have to keep your participation a secret. This is double-secret marketing campaign."

Ed said he wasn't paid but he got a very nice thank you note from Quincy Jones signed "the Asshole", as Ed original thought he was a crank caller.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

    This is nonsense.

First of all, Jackson wouldn't have had that kind of money to offer, nor would Jones. It's not even logical to spend that kind of money for a few seconds of work.

Pre Thriller, I'm sure he wasn't raking in the dough. Not even from Jackson 5 days. I could be wrong.

Second, a record company wouldn't front that kind of dough either.

It sounds like urban myth amongst the manager community.
