    Default Big River

EC mentioned Big River originally being Big Trouble.

I was under the impression that Big Trouble floated around in the original Roth days and was reworked and ended up being Big Trouble on Eat 'Em 'N Smile. Is this so?

No, Big Trouble has become Big River on ADKOT. The EEAS song is totally different.

    Zero Demo version

    Warner Bros demo version

apparently recorded for Diver Down as well. one of the most curiously un-used VH tracks from the original era...

also I have my reservations about Vai but his solo on the DLR Big Trouble is sheer perfection imo

The DLR EEAS version is a great song but fuck me, the solo in it is insane. Steve Vai has said that he was at his playing peak through this era & I reckon this is one of his best ever solo's. Definitely gets the fur rising...
If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

vai tends to disappear up his own arsehole on his solo albums but as a session player/band member he's done some amazing stuff

Yeah, the music for the VH demo Big Trouble (one of the best songs ever!) is the exact same on VH's Big River, but forget the Gene Simmons demo Big Troubles. Gene ruins it. Listen to the Warner Brothers demo Big Trouble.

    Starts here @33:24:

Dave used the title for an EEAS song (one of his best). Lyrically, VH Big Trouble, One Foot Out the Door and DLR solo Big Trouble are thematically similar. Makes one wonder if, like Ed has old riffs lying around, Dave has lyric notebooks going back years and whether some of EEAS lyrics were written in VH days. Very curious to hear someday what lyrics were on the Diver Down demo of Big Trouble.

Many might not know that the demos for the EEAS sessions are out there. Here is the 1986 Big Trouble demo. it is fascinating to hear a song in its barebones stage versus polished.

I'd bet he does have some lyrics in the vault from the VH days, or at least some lyrical themes and ideas that he sketched out.

Those are both great songs, listening to 5150 and EEAS I always find myself trying to pair up which lyrics would have gone with which songs on the other album.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

During some of the interviews, or podcasts he did for ADKOT, Dave said he's always writing down lyrical ideas and phrases and saves them for possible future use.

I agree with you guys, Big Trouble is one of the best on EEAS, and that album is by far the most I ever liked listening to Vai. I just can't get into most of his other stuff outside of EEAS and Skyscraper.

the one Vai album I do actually rate as some of the best stuff he's done is Alien Love Secrets. it's just no nonsense Vai rocking out from start to end, recommend it if you get a chance. his other albums like Fire Garden, Ultra Zone, Sex & Religion (even Passion & Warfare) leave me cold for some reason

I saw Vai in concert a few years back. He was awesome! I must admit EEAS has been his career highlight so far.

When that album came out, I didn't see a down side to his departure from VH. Sammy ended up with an incredible band and so did Dave. At that point, there were no losers.

"Big Trouble" is Dave's best solo tune.

Can't disagree, but I am partial to "Ladies' Nite in Buffalo", even with the odd title, just think that is great songwriting.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his
