Default The First Amendment Should Never Protect Hatred

One of the most admirable things about Europe is that most (if not all) of the right-wing rhetoric that you hear in the US is explicitly against the law there. Until the US passes comprehensive laws against hate speech, it will never be able to call itself a free country, much less the leader of the free world.

That's the most backwards thing I have ever read.

Protecting hate speech is one of the things that makes a country free, that everyone can speak their mind. Who is going to delineate what is hate speech? Who has the moral authority to do so? The government? Fuck that. This country was founded upon one basic principle, not having the fucking government telling you what you can read, think and say. Thank God.

I can't even comprehend how anyone in a modern society can have that opinion. The Grand Dragon of the KKK is a vile human being, but I hope we always live in a country where he is free to have those racist opinions without reprisal from the government.

I did the same thing, DD. She's consistent. I can't seem to make the link as to how hate speech is a human rights issue, at least not as in such broad terms as what she sees. Inciting someone to violence through speech is one thing, but she's way beyond that.

As you indicated, it doesn't follow that limiting speech "ensur[es] that it is used responsibly and for the purposes of good." In fact, I question the premise of that conclusion, that the purpose of speech is to promote good.

It's interesting that she singles out right-wing commentators, at least who she defines as right-wing, and gives the left a pass. I'm no fan of Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter, but I don't see them as any worse than Al Sharpton and Lawrence O'Donnell. That leads me to believe that she wants to define what constitutes illegal speech, and I'm guessing that none of it would be hers.

Our Founding Fathers were very wise in the crafting of the Constitution. They knew that one man's religion is another man's folly, and to put a modern spin on it, one person's hate speech is another's core value. It's not governments place to interfere with how men and women think and speak.

God, I can't even understand how a person can think that way.

As long as there's no aardvark raping, I guess that's okay.

Although there is a bit of irony in your comment, considering the subject matter, evh.

i did like this quote from the article

In the US, however, no such laws exist. Right-wing hatemongers like Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, Bill Maher, and Sarah Palin (to name just a few) are allowed to freely incite hatred and violence, oppose human rights, and undermine progress with impunity.

in what world is Bill Maher a right wing hate mongerer?

What if you hate a political ideology or policy?

Slippery slope best left for college freshman to argue about.

Hate speech has it's place in a trial...for establishing and proving a motive.

Because he rips on Islam. That's all it takes to be a rightwinger to some people.

I thought the subject at hand was the First Amendment and free speech?

Some of them being slave owners for me doesn't detract from the quality of the forming document that they drafted, they are two separate issues. A large portion of the world still had legal slavery (including your Canada I believe) and indentured servitude at the time, our Founding Fathers weren't alone on that fact.

Mike, that is incorrect, there were many abolitionist founders. It is a myth that they were ok with slavery. The three fifths clause is another thing that has been twisted in our schools.

educate me more on this. Were they all anti slavery and just failed to include it? (don't mean that question as an ass, just don't understand how they weren't ok with slavery and allowed it)
