Default KISS vs. The Beatles : Throwdown ;-)

This topic was getting messy, taking over on another thread. thought it deserved it's own place

now, you might not LIKE the Beatles. you might prefer the Stones (or Kiss or anyone). but that doesn't change The Beatles CEMENTED place at the top of the pop/rock food chain.

I'm sure everyone would agree The Beatles are the biggest, most universally liked band in history, hard to argue that.

But also some comments like above is what leads to the "overrated" ideas that may come up. Not singling you guys out at all, there is some truth to those comments... just saying The Beatles do seem to have untouchable status...and anyone that says differently might be struck down, or sent back to 4th grade ;-)

They are the universal default, the common, expected answer is to say, of course the Beatles are the greatest, most influential band. Maybe it's true... and probably no one else will ever take that crown.

The Beatles are the most popular...that's it. Period, end of story.

Leave at that and they are no longer overrated.

But they can't...they just want to keep overrating them and it's hilarious to watch.

That's because...thanks to the impact of hysteria on children and it's lasting effects...beatles fans missed my point completely and reacted like beliebers....which only proved my initial point.

It's mind-blowing to me that there is a thread to make your case on who was better, The Beatles or Kiss. I understand all about making unpopular arguments. Nirvana may have been what broke big, but Kurt Cobain dying is why they are deified. They weren't that good. In fact, I'll argue to my death bed that Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and (non-Seattle band) STP are all better than Nirvana. Of course, I'm told I am an idiot when I say that.

Funny thing is, I like Gene Simmons. He's a fascinating guy and a brilliant marketer and business man. He was recently on one of Adam Carolla's many podcasts (Take a Knee) and he was just so compelling.

I just don't think his band's very good. In fact, that's why I think he is such a brilliant marketer and business man. He's taken an okay band and made them legendary. That's all him.

The Beatles aren't for everybody. It's music. There are things people won't like. There are lots of Beatles songs I don't like. A buddy of mine is a fantastic guitar player. He hates The Beatles. His argument is that if they didn't exist, someone else would have been the band to deify, the band that was the "greatest," etc. He's probably right. Besides, there are people who just don't like early era Beatles and think the Stones are five times the band that The Beatles are. Fine. I get it.

I know Tom Morello said that what Elvis and The Beatles were to previous generations, Kiss was to his generation. I have to take his word for it because I wasn't there. But that would mean that the equivalent to my generation was Nirvana. I grew up in that era. I think Nirvana is incredibly overrated.

The thing about The Beatles was songwriting. That's why they are put up there. They stopped playing live pretty early on. Over a short amount of time they put out a wealth of highly versatile music.

To me, Kiss was more marketing than anyone else. Now to be told how wrong I am...

LM97...you were the sanest to reply during that.

That thing started when Brett wanted to know how anyone could like KISS. I said it was because of it's effect on me as a kid...then I baited him with the effect the Beatles had on kids.

At no point was my position what music should you like better...

The only people arguing what music should be liked better were the Beliebers...I mean Beatlemaniacs.

Did you see Heather Mills interview this week where she dismisses Paul's career to writing "a few cool songs in the 60's and then a few in the 70's" -- now that is funny, ha.

I'm sure she appreciated his writing when it was on a bank check. Skank!

I can't believe there is now a thread dedicated to this lunacy.
"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen
