Default If you had to show someone one song to represent Van Halen, what would it be?

You're showing someone a song to show them WHAT IS VAN HALEN. What do you think is representative of the band? It's not exactly "best" or "favorite" song.
Can be representative of all of Van Halen or you can pick two, one for Dave and one for Sam. One album with Gary kind of throws him out of the legacy a bit, but you can include him if you want.

I'll post my opinion after what you all say, I don't want to influence responses.

Interesting question. If you are trying to represent each ERA of the band, then sure, pick one song by each singer.

But if you could only pick one or two or three songs to represent what was so earth-shattering about VAN HALEN, why would you want to go out of your way to present one song by each singer?

Let's say you get three songs. If it was me, and I wanted to knock someone's socks off and make the most powerful statement I possibly could, I would definitely stick exclusively to the Dave era.

For Dave era, I'd say Panama. For Sammy era, When It's Love.

Eruption. Not a song per say...not the band.

But I play it for anyone that has not heard them or even likes rock and the reaction is always fun.

I'm going to say Hot for Teacher and 5150.

Great solos, lyrics, flow, and feel.

I was tossed up between Summer Nights and 5150 , based on that criteria ^^^ , from the Sam era .

HFT is my pick for those same reasons from the Dave era , and it's not even my fav song from the first 6 albums ... That would be Panama

    "Hear About It Later"

If I wanted to introduce someone to VH, with just one song, it would be HAIL. If they didn't like that, then I wouldn't be interested in any other songs they might like. It's a litmus test for me.

    Mean Street.

You've got that intro, which is STILL just mind blowing.
Then you've got that riff, heavy as hell yet funky, too.
Then you've got Dave's great lyrics & delivery.
Then you have that badass chorus.
Then you get to this almost sunny sounding break-down, that just swings so hard.
Then a masterpiece of aggression, in the solo.
Then they take things down with that amazing outro section.

1981 has to be VH's peak in terms of everything.

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.
