Chickenfoot LV vs. Van Halen Live In Tokyo
With all the buzz going on (both positive and negative) about the new Van Halen Live In Tokyo release just around the corner, I wanted to get a conversation going on a few things:
1. We all know the Van Halen Live In Tokyo is the real deal in terms of being live. May not be the best performance but its the real deal in terms of it being live. With that said, is the Chickenfoot LV release also a true live release or has it been cleaned up?
2. In terms of "production", which one out of the 2 do you think captures that "groove" element that makes you feel like you are there live.
3. And last, out of the two, which band do you think displays a tighter rhythm section.
Let's Play Ball!!!

I don't think Joe is boring, he's different than Ed in a lot of respects, he's still kind of new to the "band" experience since he's done instrumentals for so long. I really enjoy his playing on the CF records.

1. I'm sure it was touched up in some way.
2.Have to hear VH live first.
3. Good question. Mike stays in the pocket more if I remember correctly from my '09 show. Wolf plays more like a guitar player if you ask me. Now...I'm not down on that, just an observation. So based on that, I would say Chad and Mike from what I have seen with my own eyes.Utilize. Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.

Sorry Brett. Wasn't my intention to get people riled up or anything like that. I too play guitar and was just geeking out over the musicianship of both bands. Was not trying to imply that one bad is better than the other but just wanted to get fans perspective on what they liked and didn't like from both live albums.
I come in peace...

Haven't heard CF live and probably never will.
I don't like live albums. RHRN and the soon to be Tokyo Live are the only two I have. Oh, and I have The Kinks live, I got it in the mail back when they still did that and I actually really liked it.
So there. Three.
I just don't dig live discs for the most part.If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Wolf plays bass like a guitarist so he doesn't have a true bass player mentality. Mike does. I would say that's a big difference in being tighter and laying down a groove.

My complaint with Wolf if I was to nit pick is that I don't think he emphasizes the dominant beat.
I suck compared to Wolf, lets get that out of the way. But when I play, I try to accentuate the dominant beat.
Bass is a rhythm instrument first and foremost, fills are nice, but don't forget what your main role is. I always feel that sometimes what you DON'T play as a bassist can be more important than what you do play.
My $0.02.If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

I feel like, Wolf feels, that he has to add fills because he's the son of EVH.
He cant just lay down a basic groove, because then he will be seen, as any other normal bass player.
He's no Jaco or Billy, but he has to live up to his DNA. This may be because of personal pressure, or it may be because of his dad hyping him up for years.
Either way...he ain't no true bass player.

I would disagree with you there. The guy is an incredible bass player, he can play anything, he really can. He is becoming a monster musician, period. When I first started playing bass, I too felt the need to try and show off what I can do, but I lay back in my playing now more than ever. And I think we sound better because of it.
But that could easily be just my personal taste. If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

When you look at the bass players Eddie wanted to replace Mike with, (Jeff Berlin, Billy Sheehan) Wolf's noodling makes sense. This is what Eddie has wanted in Van Halen for years.
"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump
"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5
"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana
'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth
"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth
"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango
"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Yeah, but he would tell Mike "Hey, it's in E, ride the root."
The more I think on it, I don't think Ed wanted those guys in Van Halen, he was just spit balling when he was talking to them. When Push Came to Shove, I doubt he would have really wanted Berlin or Sheehan in VH.If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.
