Default A Part Of OU812's Inspriation: AC/DC's Powerage

Okay, bust out your copies of AC/DC's 1987 classic Powerage and Van Halen's OU812. Here we go...

Check out DC's "Down Payment Blues". Listen to the chords in the into. Now listen to "Sucker In A 3-Piece", in particular, the part after the solo where the guitar starts to build the song up again. Sounds familiar? It's just about the exact same thing.

Now, listen to "Riff Raff". Start it at about :56 and listen. Angus' spidery, bluesy riff reminds me a lot of Eddie's wierd, spidery, bluesy riff in "A.F.U. (Naturally Wired)". In fact, while listening to "Riff Raff" I can almost hear Sammy screaming “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah” etc) when the go to the D about 1:07.

Anyone else ever notice this? Years ago, my friend's brother pointed out the "Down Payment Blues" thing to me when he heard us listening to OU812. I realized the "Riff Raff"/"A.F.U." thing when I first bought Powerage, which would have been early 91; I bought all of AC/DC's albums after The Razor's Edge came out and kicked my ass...I had to own more DC than just Highway.. and Back In Black.

I certainly wouldn't argue against it. I think there's been a lot of AC/DC references in the OU812-FUCK eras where people have mentioned that Eddie will play their songs backstage/soundcheck/whatever. OU812 definitely has the most AC/DC vibe with Source, Sucker, AFU, and a bit of Cabo Wabo.

And weren't the band listening to Powerage a lot while on their second album tour? I thought I remember reading that in an article once.

Nope. Ed doesn't listen to other artists. Pretty sure he covered that at the Smithsonian. I know I've read it in interviews.

Yep, everyone upon hearing them could hear the similarities. I seriously doubt Ed ever remembers hearing these songs, though. He doesn't appear to be much of a music listener.

When the guys once asked me to write something with an AC/DC beat, that ended up being “Panama.” It really doesn’t sound that much like AC/DC, but that was my interpretation of it.

“Drop Dead Legs” is one of the most unique songs on the album.

That was inspired by AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” I was grooving on that beat, although I think that “Drop Dead Legs” is slower. Whatever I listen to somehow is filtered through me and comes out differently. “Drop Dead Legs” is almost a jazz version of “Back in Black.” The descending progression is similar, but I put a lot more notes in there.

I hear a few similarities, here and there (no pun intended). But if you want a closer bridge between AC/DC and Van Halen: "Highway to Hell" and "Best of Both Worlds". The chord structure and progressions are very similar. JMHO.

funny I just mentioned the DDL/Back In Black connection on the main board yesterday before clicking this thread, in fact I was searching for that EVH quote about Back In Black so thanks.

Somehow I never made the connection between Down Payment Blues and Sucker IA3P despite pretty much growing up with both tracks being among my faves. Once someone pointed it out to me it was obvious and now I can't not hear it!

While we're on the subject, the main riff to Little Guitars reminds me of a speeded up version the intro to For Those About To Rock... a bit anyway

EVH and Angus Young are very similar players in a way, and yet completely different in other ways.

the riff to Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be is possibly even closer!

I'm pretty sure that a couple years ago EVH said that Powerage was one of his favorite albums. I think he said that Wolfgang is into it to.
Any musicians near Boston / Cape Cod want to get together and play some VH? I play drums, guitar, keyboard, bass, and I sing. I want to start a VH tribute band. Contact me if interested.

The main riff to Humans Being always reminded me of Overdose off Let There Be Rock.
