    Default Wylde Audio ???

Just picked up the new GW issue , and came across a feature on Zakk Wylde .
Seems like Zakk is jumping into the signature gear industry big time . Yeah - he's got some pieces out there already , the MXR chorus and overdrive units , the Dunlop wah , and an Epiphone guitar that looks like a coffin , etc.

However ... Zakk says he's gradually gonna jettison all those (as well as his Gibson and Marshall arsenal) and has started his own company - Wylde Audio .

He's going the route taken by Eddie and Fender , with the EVH line of musical instruments and products .
I like his playing , particularly the older stuff , but this move seems a bit out of left field . I certainly didn't see it coming , nor did I expect a market for it .

    Discuss ...

"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

It's a smart business move. I don't know how many Bullseye/Camo/whatever guitars he sells, but this will probably bring about new instruments which appeal to a greater number of guitarists.

And, I didn't even know there was a Zakk Marshall head. I haven't been keeping up with him. I bet it sounds good.

Dunno if you guys have seen the guitars, but... YECH!!!

The amps might be interesting. They look like they're basically JCM800 copies.

It's odd, though... He's not doing what Ed did, bringing out things that people were familiar with and want. He's kinda gone weird with the designs. I don't think he's going to be too successful with them. However, that's just me. I like different, but not different ONLY to be different.

    You mean this?

I'm not really a fan of "metal looking" designs. I don't even like this twist on an explorer.

But if the amps are JCM800 clones I will give it a try.

Don't much like any of the guitar designs, but the amps, hmmmmmm. He's saying that he wants the head under $1000. That means the little 15 watt combo should be considerably less. I'm interested.

I've seen this already. I think the guitars will be like the Neil Schonn signature guitar from the 80s. Anybody remember that one? Me neither. However some metal guys seem to dig them.

Like everyone else I'm interested in the amp. It's gotta be a high gain 800 copy. And the price he's shooting for is good. He could be onto something with the amp.

I am a huge Zakk fan and was surprised at this move because he is so loyal to Gibson/Marshall/Dunlop, but it is cool to see him move into this direction. He also said he is looking beyond guitar gear; mics, boards, pro audio stuff, should be interesting...

As far as the gear, I have to say that I am not digging the guitars. I am not a huge fan of altered styles of explorers, V's. LP's, etc. Would be interesting if the guitars had different neck profiles, radius', woods that differed from the Gibson models beyond slight aesthetics...

But if the ZW JCM800 clone, especially a low watt clone that's reasonably priced is in the works I think there would be a demand for that

I just don't see a big enough market for his stuff to sustain the brand for the long term. The fan boys will be taken care of in the first year or two, and then what ?
Zak is a great player , however he is no EVH in terms of brand appeal or reach .................. Just my humble opinion.

I've never met Zakk (Jeff), but I'm from the same area. I've dated several girls he went to HS with. A few friends of mine actually used to take lessons from him. People assume that he is a mega millionaire because he was with Ozzy for all those years. I am sure that whatever contract he signed as a 20 year old as far as publishing rights and all was not written in his best interest. He's just trying to provide for his family long term, so I respect that. Not a big fan of the bullseye guitars, but if the price is right and they are quality instruments, I wouldn't be opposed to picking one up knowing he would be getting a lot more of the cut than he was selling shit for Gibson or whoever.

Anytime a guy wants to go out on his own I am supportive. Screw the big companies. Even if they don't sell very well, I'm sure he will do better than being endorsed by Fender/Gibson/Marshall.

    Good for him.

I'll always support the smaller brands.

I'll build my own replica before buying any Fender EVH product and support a small American company like K&E or Musikraft.

From earlier post by AFU: "I've seen this already. I think the guitars will be like the Neil Schonn signature guitar from the 80s. Anybody remember that one? Me neither. However some metal guys seem to dig them.

lol! I do unfortunately remember them. I remember seeing ads for them in Guitar Player mag thinking they were horrible looking. In fact I got a hell of a shock with those. I had applied as an assembler/QC lead at a well known Canadian Luthier's shop in Vancouver around 1995. I walked into the main shop, and along the left wall on the floor were these familiar shaped unfinished guitar bodies on the floor.....A LOT of them! I asked the manager, "Why do you have those?"
He said "we actually used to ghost build them, then took on the manufacturing in name later."
He also said Jackson saw the writing on the wall, and they were already parting with their tooling for the line quite early, but because of the contractual obligation, they had agreed to have a certain number built.
So they had other builders finish the initial run in hopes that maybe the shape and design would grow on players eventually, at least breaking even...Best case scenario continuing the run successfully.
    It didn't.
I asked him why they had them still, and he said that they were a sore spot, because of a falling out with Charvel/Jackson, and they were expensive to produce, so they didn't want to just dispose of them, so they were trying to figure out a way to re-purpose them, a reshape, or some kind of music for special kids program...Something to make the ordeal worth while.

The issue was not just with the shape, but also the Neil Schon spec'd tailpiece/ bridge design which was unique....so don't know whatever happened.
It was just too weird at the time to be successful.

The Wylde guitars....I'm with you guys. Not really appealing. Adding weird squiggled profiles here and there to an already standard design ( like the Paul) just looks hack.
I would be interested in hearing the head though.
