Default Do you find it hard to be a Van Halen "fan" at times?

I was thinking this morning, it's sometimes kind of hard to be a fan of this band. First there's the constant bickering about Sam and Dave. You can't talk about 1 without someone chiming in about the other. Even if it has nothing to do with "the other guy" someone is always looking to start that fight.

Second, I don't know if anyone else feels this way but I feel like they kind of do things half assed. this started with the BOV1 stuff....Dave's back..no he's not. Gary's in the band and he rocks....well, the record kind of sucks....Sammy's back (in 2004) but Ed is a disaster and the new music is sub par....the band is going into the RRHOF!!! but Ed, Al and Dave don't show up....the band is doing a guitar hero....but Wolf is in there instead of Mike...cool VH put pics of all the Dave era records on their website but they removed mike's pic...the band is back with Dave but Mike is gone...They're releasing a new record...but it's a lot of music we've already heard before...they're putting out a live record but it sounds like crap..etc.

    it goes on and on.

I know a lot of guys like to say that no matter what the band does people are going to bitch but I don't know how true that is.

I am just finding it very hard to be a fan of tis band these days.

    Anyone else feel this way?

    No.

I love most of their music, and I like coming here and reading about all the Spinal Tap-like drama.

Nope. Still love the band, love seeing the Three Twins playing together, am happy Dave made it back to the band, and enjoyed all five shows I saw the last two tours. Guess I'm in the minority but there isn't any other current rock band out there now I like half as much. Great rock bands are a dying breed and seem to be going the way the big bands did in the 60s. I'm gonna enjoy VH while I can.

The only time for me was the initial breakup and the '96 fiasco. They handled Dave's departure like a bunch of bitches. I've accepted their dysfunctional ways so everything else doesn't bother me.

I look at Van Halen and their fans as one big dysfunctional family. As members come and go, it's great for Van Halen but hard on the fans. Some members are dismissed completely while others cling to the past. Communication for the most part is non-existent. You can see why tension exists.

I guess as a fan, you need to decide if you can go-with-the-flow and accept it all or choose to enter a futile fight nitpicking the entire Van Halen timeline. Or you can accept Van Halen as a band that has produced great music in every incarnation and say WTF...who cares! The choice is yours.

Ed Leffler dying was the worst thing to ever happen to Van Halen. He kept the egos and douchebagginess in check, ever since his passing, the inmates have run the asylum.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

My reply to the question of if I'm a fan now is always "I used to be".

It's like anything in life. You have the ups and downs.
Are there things that I would've like to have seen the band do...of course.
Does that stop me from being a huge fan.....no way.

VH is my favorite band. Always has, always will be.

Being a fan of a band, for me, is just for fun, you know? It's not my job, so I try not to sweat it.

As I get older and my family's growing pains become more important to me than rock n' roll, I certainly worry about these old bands less and less. And so many of the great bands are doing less and less, or diminishing in different ways.

I used to get really pissed off that Yes could have had a more varied live setlist. I used to b!tch about it constantly. One day I just decided to stop collecting live boots, and I haven't seen them live in over a decade. Feels much better.

As far as VH goes, I very much wish things went down differently in just about every way, since 1996. But I guess I'm more in control of how much that bothers me, than I used to be.

The drama has no impact on my fandom. It's all about the music for me. I don't care about what goes on behind the scenes or whether any band cares as much about me as I do about them. Give me a product that I enjoy and make me feel I got my money's worth if I see you live and it's all good. The extra crap is a bonus, if anything, as it gives me something to do, or post about here at the Links, when I'm bored at work.

Not especially. 12 albums of original material is a long and prolific career by music standards. I guess I just wish the band would be a bit more communicative with the fanbase.

In the internet age, there is just no reason to be so secretive and cryptic about everything. Tour coming? Great, tell us. Tour not coming? Disappointing, but tell us. Tour is a maybe? Again, just say it. It doesn't have to be this hard.

I find it easy to be a fan of the music, but frustrating to be a fan of the band that makes it.

Since the problems on the 2004 reunion with Hagar and the ultimate departure of Mike I haven't really thought of them as a band in the same way I do other classic rock acts. It seems like they only really function as a band when they are on stage. Off-stage it's never clear if they are hard at work on a project or no longer on speaking terms. Other bands like Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones, who vary between creative differences to outright hostility between members, still seem to communicate and work together. Maybe VH will figure it out. I'll still be a fan regardless.

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.
