Alright ... keep seeing this thread popping up .. might as well go for it:

Jump - my real intro to the band and still has that same charm
Panama - really the first song that got me into Van Halen; never heard 'em before
Feel Your Love Tonight - first thing I ever heard from VH in my life
Mine All Mine - never heard of VH before this
Drop Dead Legs - what a song, who is this band, my initial reaction
Girl Gone Bad - had never heard anything like, it, found out it was VH; = SOLD
House of Pain - I was like, this CAN'T be Yes; turns out: VH, I'm like, I need more o' that
In 'N' Out - Who is this? VH? Who is THAT? I've been a fan ever since
Could This Be Magic? - first time I ever heard Van Halen was this song
5150 - 1st impression of VH and will always stay with me for that reason

J/K about the reasons, but the list is a reasonable top ten faves.

    The real reasons are:
    Not enough distortion
Too much Van, not enough Halen
    Chickenshit!
    Dave is yelping/phrasing is off/pitchy
You can't be in two bands
    Wolf or the Golf
    Dave or the Grave
    Sammy or the Grammy
    Batshit!
    Templeman

In no order, just what comes to mind in the moment.

Little Gutars...Eddie, what a crazy riff....and Dave's lyrics...Señorita I'm in trouble again come and talk to me!
Such a feel good summer song....all of this combines it probably why it's my wife's ringtone

Girl Gone Bad....every one is firing on all cylinders...powerful display of audio pyrotechniques...felt that way back in '84 and my opinion hasn't changed

5150... This song has grown on me...admittedly don't hear it until the late 1990s, but this song has it all.

Aftershock...my favorite from Balance, still crank the system when this comes up.

Me Wise Magic....whoa, the possibilities of where they could've gone with this style.
Got a speeding ticket while listening to this song on an Air Force Base...refused to turn the radio down...I outranked the patrol Officer so too bad.

Humans Being....this song brought me back to being a Van Halen Fan...I heard it on the radio (remember doing that?) every day for weeks...infectious and powerful.

Outta Love Again...Alex is the star here, and after that second solo by Eddie, that is saying something.

Dirty Movies....love the noodling and the build up of this song....

Unchained....balls to the walls in your face fun

She's the Woman....well aside from the strangest title this song really jumps on ADKOT...after hearing Tattoo then this...all is right with the 'Van Halen' world...and I like the song Tattoo...its just that I like the rest of the album so much more than the first cut.

    No order.

Bottoms Up! - This song helped the "party band" label take shape. Played live, back then, the energy was off the charts.

Unchained - The best riff ever! And the best pre chorus riff ever.

Girl Gone Bad - A showcase of the bands true power.

Everybody Wants Some! - The greatest intro ever.

In a Simple Rhyme - An underrated classic. A perfect meld of beautiful melodies and hard rock intensity.

Hear About it Later - The perfect rock song.

Little Guitars - One of Dave's best.

Beautiful Girls - Incredible harmonies. Ed's riffs and grooves are unlike anything in the catalog.

I'm The One - Ed, and everyone, at their best.

Light Up The Sky - The power of this song is immense. The solo can melt brains.

I had to think about this, but I think this is fairly accurate.

    10. Panama - Just a cool, fun song that sums up a lot about what VH was about. One of the best intros with Ed and Alex sounding like they're pouring in everything they've got when they strike those opening notes.

    9. Romeo Delight - This is a go-to song to get pumped up. The guitar and drums just destroy. Complete with lyrics that are just downright cool.

    8. Right Now - I love when pianos/keyboards are used right in rock songs, and it was used perfectly here. Everytime I hear it I want to learn piano again just to play this song.

    7. The Dream Is Over - This is the song that got me hooked. We had just gotten an MP3 player and my parents put all their music on it. I was on the treadmill when this came on and I was floored by what I was hearing. At first I was amazed by the song in general, especially those harmonies in the chorus. Then I later paid more attention to the guitar playing and realized I HAD to play guitar.

    6. Feelin - I could pick several from Balance for this spot, but I feel this is the best representation. The album contains some of their best written and best sounding music, and there is so much emotional weight in the music and vocals, it drives me crazy that they couldn't at least follow up with one more album like this. I know it turns some people off, but I also love the "maturity" in their sound here.

    5. Mean Street - Badass lyrics with one of the sickest hard rock riffs ever. Eddie's tone alone makes Mean Street worthy of being in my top 10. It's not too fast and not too slow. The groove and rhythm is incredible.

    4. In A Simple Rhyme - One of VH's best attributes is how it combines harmonies with heavy arena rock riffs. This is the best example of that, I think. It's melodic but every time I listen to it either my head is bobbing along, my finger is tapping in rhythm, or my adrenaline is getting a boost while I'm running.

    3. Ain't Talkin' Bout Love - For as much as this song gets played, it's hard for me to get tired of it. Classic riff and one of the coolest anthemic choruses in all of rock. I also love the guitar solo because of how memorable and melodic it is, much like Runnin with the Devil. I've grown to like those more than the more "shred" ones.

    2. Humans Being - Like I've touched on when discussing Feelin', EVH and the band were at a creative high here. Great riffs, drums, and bass. Eddie's solos could have easily become too much and taken away from the song, but they're melodic and menacing in ways that manage to compliment the song as a whole. I think it also helps make the song stand out that the vocal melody is so unlike VH until the chorus.

    1. Unchained - When I think of quintessential Van Halen (especially Dave era), I think of this song. This will forever be in my top 5 rock riffs and in the back of my head, I constantly aspire to write a riff just as good. I've never really figured out what this song's about, but that chorus is awesome and fucking rad. I could probably do without the breakdown which gets cheesy after a bit, but this song is the reason why I have lost some hearing and when the band opened with it back at my show in '12, my mind was beyond blown.

Special shoutout: The guitar, bass, and drums in Pleasure Dome. Should have just been an instrumental. There has to be some recording in 5150 that's just Ed, Alex, and Mike playing.

I wanted to participate in this but haven't had the time to really give it a lot of thought. Similar to others, I'll give songs that come to mind though I may end up leaving some out. I couldn't narrow it down so here are 14 of my top 10 (in alphabetical order):

    Atomic Punk
    D.O.A.
    Hang 'Em High
    Hear About It Later
    In A Simple Rhyme
    Light Up The Sky
    Little Dreamer
    Mean Street
    Romeo Delight
    Somebody Get Me A Doctor
    Take Your Whiskey Home
    The Full Bug
    Unchained
    Women In Love

It really is a tour de force .
Nothing to do with a petty singer debate - those things bore me to death , and I feel sorry for those who have to choose , while closing their minds and ears to entire decades worth of awesome material .

5150 has it all , IMO . That song IS Van Halen .

I don't quite understand the love for Little Guitars. It is a good tune but top 10 VH? that is baffling to me. If I had to lose one of the 4 proper original VH songs from DD it would be that one, easily. Each to their own...

That's right.... to each his own.... If I had to lose 3 songs from the 1st album, they would easily be: RWTD, YRGM, & On Fire.
