Default The Private Photo Shoot that Sparked a War Inside Van Halen

Cool article by Greg Renoff. In case you're tired complaining about current day VH, we can complain about 1980 VH

    ------

In 1979 David Lee Roth met Helmut Newton, inciting an ego-fueled power struggle that ultimately split the group apart

Van Halen’s star was on the rise in late 1979. Vocalist David Lee Roth, bassist Michael Anthony, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and drummer Alex Van Halen had sent sold out crowds into delirium on their wildly successful 1978 and 1979 world tours. They had two platinum albums under their belts, and their latest, Van Halen II, had even cracked the Billboard Top Ten. These were significant achievements for a hard rock band at time when disco and new wave dominated the nation’s airwaves.

Dear God, all of them, ALL OF THEM, act like little children.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Fascinating read. Thanks for posting. I always thought the photos for WACF were some of the coolest in rock history. It's amazing that DLR and the Van Halens were more than likely barely on speaking terms when the iconic shots were taken. Kudos to Seireeni.

In terms of the band's relationship, it's clear that it's been dysfunctional pretty much from the start. This could have been written at any time over the past 30 years:

Even as the Jack Daniel’s flowed in celebration, the brothers remained resentful about Roth’s seemingly insatiable appetite for the spotlight. “They saw themselves as the sound of the band,” Seireeni observes, “and the band has their name. From their perspective, they’d hired DLR just to be the voice of Van Halen.”

That said, it's doubtful we'd have gotten 6 great albums if not for the tension and adversarial relationship.

Someone please explain - please - why the secret project couldn't have been the Norman Seeff photo shoot film footage, which is listed in the Pacific Titles Archives inventory.

Thanks, glad you liked the article.

I agree, and that's kind of the point of the piece. This was nothing new. You can be sure stuff like this was going on inside the band for its entire existence.

Dang. That was a great article and very well written. It was really cool reading the part how Seeff saved the day with his legendary photoshoot.

Greg, this is a great teaser. I cannot wait to read your book!

That is exactly the kind of archival stuff I would pay to have.

I definitely see the band's point in this dispute. Everyone feels like they contribute. When the singer gets all the attention it tends to irritate. Most of the time, you just realize that's the way it works....people only really care about singing. The other stuff is just there in the background to non-musicians. So you play along knowing the singer is going to get a disproportionate amount of attention.

But if you show up and and see what looks like a private photo shoot from a photographer who is openly acting like he isn't interested in shooting the band? ...And the singer was the guy who arranged to hire the photographer?

Come on...who wouldn't be angry? Check out the back covers of the first two albums.....Dave dominated. At some point, that's asking for trouble. WB played a role by agreeing to that stuff for the sake of $$$. ("The fans will want to see Dave!...Put a shot of just him on the back covers!")

Makes me want to go back in time and sit down with each of them and explain how things can lead to hurt feelings.

Also...great...more footage of the early years hidden away in a "vault". WTF..... This band is ridiculous with the hoarding! Being a VH fan is a true test of patience.

You put one of the greatest stage front men in rock history
    together with...
the greatest rock guitarist on the planet

AND... a war for recognition is going to be par for the course

To put SO MUCH ability in one single band had its pluses, and it's minuses

Great article. It all makes sense now that the Van Halens have been petulant narcissists from the start. One of the worst decisions of Roth's entire career is suggesting to name the band Van Halen. Makes one wonder how everything might have turned out if Mammoth wasn't already taken and that would have been the band's moniker all these years whether or not the Van Halens would have or could have exerted as much power as they have all this time.

And file this under the you-learn-something-new-every-day category: all these years and I never noticed that Mike is holding a joint in that picture on the back cover of Women and Children First.

    The thing is...

Is that everybody KNEW Dave was a star even before they were famous. His ego was well established and he didn't try to hide it.

Ed, on the other hand, always tried to downplay his ego. The guitar wizard that just wants to be left alone in his laboratory. Both him and his brother's were just as big...apparently.
