Default Where do you purchase your digital music?

The site that I had been using for the past 10 years or so went down a few months ago, and I'm getting frustrated with Amazon and other services that won't let me handle the music that I purchase the way that I want. Where do you buy your music? I really liked what I was using before because it was DRM-free. I could move the mp3 to my phone and didn't have to worry about registering a new device or anything. Amazon wants me to listen to everything "in the cloud," and I don't want to do that, or they want me to register my device every time I move an mp3 over. Is there a no frills site that sells DRM-free music?

Is this the norm nowadays to have to go through this to listen to music?

Seems silly to make those that actually pay for music suffer...

ITunes. And I don't think it's protected anymore. I bought a new CD player recently and it allows me to play music from a USB, so I copied my purchased iTunes music to a flash drive and I can play it except the oldest stuff (which I believe is .m4p vs. m4a, or vice-versa). So when I have time I'll burn the older stuff to a CD-RW and then reimport it so I can play it on the CD player as well.

Yeah ITunes has been DRM free for a few years now. They do embed your apple ID in the file somewhere but you can play it on anything without any real hassle, it's just to go after people that put the files up on a torrent site or something.

Having said that we get slugged pretty hard down here by the ITunes store (The 'Australia tax' as we call it here) so I also have a US ITunes store account under a different username.

I'll buy a US ITunes store card online, buy the album at US store pricing and then just import the files over to my Australian account. Works fine.

I just use iTunes, I thought everyone did.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I've avoided using iTunes all this time. I really didn't feel like having yet another piece of bloated software running just so I could buy music, and with yet another overseer tracking my habits and collecting my info. But it sounds like that may be the way to go, so I guess I'll give it a shot.

its really low maintenance. It doesn't take up a ton of room. Just the music.

I use Amazon and there is no DRM, just straight 256k MP3s. Don't use their bloated Cloud software, get the old Amazon MP3 Downloader which simply allows you to download the MP3s to your computer. After that you can do what you wish with them.

The other thing I like with Amazon is that a lot of the time you can get the CD in addition to the MP3s for nearly the same price and sometimes cheaper than the MP3s only. Look for the Autorip logo next to the price on the site. However, I still prefer doing my own rips from CDs into the Apple M4A format at 320k. I guess I'm old school with still preferring CDs.
