Default UCR: Five Live Albums Van Halen Needs to Release

I find the Tokyo 2013 live album hard to stomach in light of the Roth-era material that was/is archived by the band.

So here's my latest piece for Ultimate Classic Rock. (FWIW: It really should be titled "Five Archival Releases VH could have rolled out instead of the Tokyo live album")

Here's my favorite two of the five. Greg

    ------

    Oakland, June 11-13, 1981

Fans have long speculated about whether Van Halen filmed a full concert during their 1981 Oakland stand, or just the three songs released as promo videos for Fair Warning. Based on the Pacific Titles inventory, it appears that only "Unchained," "So This Is Love?" and "Hear About It Later" were in fact filmed. But what’s also in the archives are 16 reels of 24-track audiotape recorded on June 11, 1981 by engineer Wally Heider with his LeMobile Studio. It’s virtually certain that these tapes document that night’s complete performance. In addition, David Lee Roth later told DJ Jim Ladd that the band did have cameras rolling over the course of all three nights to capture performances of those three songs. Whatever film leftovers exist could be released on a Blu-Ray to accompany this audio recording.

    Gene Simmons: Complete Recordings, 1976-1977

It’s well-established rock lore that Kiss' Gene Simmons "discovered" Van Halen in late 1976. Perhaps less well known is the fact that Van Halen recorded a 10-song demo tape for Simmons at New York’s Electric Lady Studios (heard below), so he could attempt to get the quartet a record deal. While it doesn’t appear Van Halen has a copy of this demo in the band’s archives, it’s likely that Simmons does. In addition, Simmons is in possession of demo recordings done in Los Angeles in 1977 that feature Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, and Simmons on bass and vocals. This power trio cranked out versions of two Kiss songs: "Got Love for Sale" and "Christine Sixteen." The three also demoed “Tunnel of Love,” a song released on Simmons’ 1978 solo album. A release of these three tracks, along with the full Van Halen demo, could also foster some powerful cross-pollination across the Kiss and Van Halen fan bases, which would surely help drive anticipation for such a release.

That video footage shot in Osaka 1978 sounds VERY , VERY cool !!!
I'd be willing to bet that it would be eaten up by VH fans if it were ever released .

I truly wish there was an official !977/78 New Year's Eve @ the Whisky a Go-Go cd too . Man , do I love that show

There's no good reason I can think of as to why we don't have an official 1984 tour document as well ...
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

We'll have to hope that Wolfgang will release this stuff decades down the road when he's the only VH left. I don't see it otherwise. Which is tragic.

No good reason, just Edward destroying and holding Van Halen hostage as usual.

There was no Van Halen material released during the Van Hagar years.

No Van Halen, nor Van Hagar, material released during the Van Cherone years.

And there will be no Van Halen, nor Van Hagar, nor Van Cherone, material released during the ridiculous Van Wolf years.

Van Halen is 4 distinct bands and, yet, all one band.

Van Wolf is both completely a nostalgia act and a completely new band.

No contradiction in Edward's mind, whatsoever.

Also note that the "2-6-85" dates on the sheet is the date that an inventory was taken, obviously not the date the material was filmed.

The Osaka material, from what I was told, is from June 1978.

    Agreed.

    Here's Eddie in 2008:

Is there going to be a CD/DVD from the tour ?

We did film and record 7 shows, but we kind of thought, why give people what they just saw? We have it. Maybe later. We just didn’t feel like the timing was right. Why give them exactly what they just saw? Somewhere in the future I’m sure it’ll surface. Maybe, if and when we decide to put everything we have out. Including things like me playing guitar at the 6th grade talent show. There’s all kinds of cool and funny shit we could put out. Who knows, really, when there are so many other things to do first. Like put out some new tunes.

Well, sure, they've released one album in 17 years, which was overwhelmingly not "new" in the first place, so maybe they just haven't had time......

I'm sorry, the sarcasm helps me cope with the insanity of this band.

Great article. As much as I love those pacific titles docs for what could be. They also just make you crazy to think all that great footage has just been sitting for years and years. We may never see?!!?

While I don't think that all decisions begin and end with Eddie , I DO think his 'vote' carries an awful lot of weight !!! Haha
Silly and frustrating that all the goodies remain under lock and key ...

I know you're pro original VH . Let me ask you this , EC :
During the Cherone era they played a lot deep cuts and the band (including Mike -lol) sounded killer . I've seen and heard some wonderful bootlegs from that tour . Would you be okay if something from 1998 was put out by the band ?

This is why all Van Halen fans need to suck up to Wolfgang. Like Obi-wan, he's our only hope....

Of course by then most VH fans will be 80 or dead. But I'll still air guitar to it with my walking cane!

    That's wild !
I'm sure in 1985 , Ed didn't want anything to do with archival Roth material , but after all these years ? Put them out !!!

It would be fantastic if the upcoming Japan live cd was followed by a 1978 Japan dvd !!!
Not gonna happen (MA is there) but hey , I'm a Van Halen fan . We're used to dreaming ...

VH needs to do what KISS did with KISSology.

    It would sell quite well...

And I still think a VH/Gene Simmons CD of all of the demo stuff from 77 would be a very successful release.

    Me too !
Both bands have pretty rabid die-hard fans . I don't see how those tapes being released could be a bad thing . Even as a limited edition/mail order sort of deal .
