Default NGD: 1992 RED EBMM EVH

I thought I should just make a separate thread for this so I can have a discussion on this instrument. I haven't actually played it (apart from verifying everything works) because it is a graduation gift I'll "get" in June. I have been granted the ability to clean it and tweak it so it performs optimally when I officially "get" the instrument.
    Here it is:

Here's a close up of the neck. There is a green grime surrounding the frets, this should come off with steel wool, right?

Here's the problem, the action. When I got the guitar, the Floyd was NOT flush with the body. It was sitting on the top, but angled horribly forward due to the owner bringing the trem adjustment posts almost to the surface (probably to improve the action). This didn't help at all, so I reversed it and set it to what I think was factory.

I sent an email Wednesday to Ernie Ball about adjusting the action, and if shimming was the next thing to do. They said yes and offered to send me three different sized shims that they use in the factory. It is Saturday (for another 30 minutes) when I post this, and I plan on installing the shims tomorrow.

So what do you all think? Steel wool + a pick to wedge against the frets and push the grime out?
EDIT: Oh, and the serial number is 81282

Thats not the one from guitar center is it?
As far as cleaning the neck Ive cleaned some of the grimiest unfinished maple necks on wolfgangs and evhs using the sandpaper, steel wool murphy oil soap method. Its time consuming but the results are worth it. If you don't want to get crazy with the sandpaper(I usually use 800 grit cut into strips that fit between the frets) Then just 0000 gauge steel wool is good to get the top layer of grim out. Recently Ive also come across music nomad products and their neck cleaner is really nice too.

    Gorgeous guitar !!!

You got me curious about the trem setup and neck action . Very interested in what the experts have to say .

    Default Shimming the neck ?

Ties in to this current thread . I'd also appreciate any and all tips for shimming an EBMM neck for optimal low action .
Before and after photos would be a bonus .

    Cheers

    Absolutely beautiful!! Congrats

When I got mine, the fretboard was really grimy and dirty. When I took it in to be setup, the tech pulled the strings and used a razor blade to clean the board and also crowned & filed the frets. He then oiled the board and it turned out great! You would not believe how much crap was built up on that board from 20-odd years of play. You made out really well and long may you enjoy!

I've had some dirty necks arrive. I just use Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes. It cleans them up real well. I wouldn't shim that neck until you have the Floyd set up. If you want a big brass block or StringSaver saddles, the time to do it is before you shim the neck.

I usually use an old business card cut into a 1/4" strip at the back of the neck pocket. cut out the 2 neck bolt screw spots and go the full width of the neck pocket at the rear

So a cut guitar pick (I mm) might be too thick ? I'll try to put up a quick photo of the action on my main guitar ...

    EBMM sent me these:

There was a third, yellow, shim but that is now in the EVH. The size goes brown < pink < yellow.
Email Music Man here: http://www.music-man.com/contact-us/...tomer-service/ and ask if they can send you shims for your Ax40s. They should send them same day you give your address information.

I just spent two hours setting up the EVH. My god, I see why these are the holy grail Eddie guitar. I have not played a nicer feeling guitar in the three years I've been playing. No floor mode Axis is even close. I played a bit on it too with my Mustang amp set to my 91-95 Eddie live tone. The amp gets me extremely close, and confirms my suspicions that what was holding the sound back before was the guitar I was using. The Ax40 doesn't have the bite, depth, or warmth the EVH has. It's an all around inferior pickup, but you bet your ass it's the closest you can get without being the real thing.

Very cool ! Thanks for the info and the pics .
I'll try sending them an email and see what happens .

Regarding the pickups ? Yeah , I'm still stoked to pick up an AX40D - with those coveted EVH ones . Will you ever buy one of those too ?

I'll need a gold one someday and I doubt it will be an EVH, I'll probably just find a deal on an Axis for two or three hundred more than a new Ax40D, I'm a sucker for Birdseye necks.

    Sweet !!!

I did own an amber AX40 that had a killer quilt . I regret selling it . I'll eventually replace it with an AX40D or a tried and true Axis .
