Default An argument with my buddy, is Van Halen Hard Rock?

I told him there was two singers and how hard rock changed completely after van halen showed up but he just keeps repeating himself.

One of these guys that downloads all the music he can find on torrents and listens to 30 second clips and decides whether he likes a song or not from that.

He tried tellin me Chinatown isnt heavy at all and no different than Aerosmiths new album. Lmao

Anybody want to help me out or point me to some articles about bands who credit van halen for hard rock and stuff like that?

What does he think is hard rock? My guess is it's a band that probably features a guitarist who only plays on the bottom 3 strings

I'm not saying this to be mean but some arguments are just so ridiculous that they're not even worth putting any energy into. This is one of them.

I think Van Halen rocks hard but what is considered typical "hard rock" might be too narrow. They incorporate a lot more elements and styles than most bands in that category. Zeppelin never considered themselves a hard rock band for the same reasons but once again, both of those bands do ROCK!

Well, if you go by torrent standards on places like Dime Van Halen is considered "Hard Rock"

When someone asks me if I believe in God, I ask him to first define God, and then I'll let him know if I believe it.

In other words, define "hard rock" and we'll discuss. But as far as the common definition goes, there are two types of rock -- hard rock and soft rock. I don't think many people would classify CVH as soft.

Hair Metal - No. Hair Metal took Dave's style and attitude and put it to terrible music, shredders trying to outshred the King. VH's music (writing) was far superior to anything we consider Hair Metal.

Heavy Metal - No. When I think of Heavy Metal, I'm thinking of Maiden, Priest, Metallica etc. VH doesn't fall into that category for me.

They're Hard Rock with a touch of Pop.

    Of course they are.

Funny how some record stores though will have Poison in the "Metal" section and VH will be in the "Pop/rock" section. It must be because "Look What the Cat Dragged In" is so much heavier and meaner than "On Fire" and "Judgement Day."

Not to disrespect your friend, but that's absurd and he doesn't deserve proof, but I suppose you can have him Google "Metal Edge Van Halen" and can see the covers, among numerous other things like Dimebag Darrell's love for them, that Metal Evolution series on VH-1 a couple years back that featured them, etc.

I'm quoting Dave from about 35 years ago, but didn't he always call VH "big rock"? I don't think he, in particular, thought that VH should be characterized as a hard rock or heavy metal band.

Definitely a hard rock band. Who just happens to have written some pop songs. Metal? Nah. It's too bluesy and canny to be metal.
