    Default Moderately priced Frankenstrat kit?

My son, who is 11, is beginning to show interest in Ed and his guitars. He asked me if we can build a Frankenstrat replica. I obviously don't want to spend a ton on it. I found this kit, http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1591276891.html. I just figured I'd ask here if anyone knows anything about it, or if there are better options for around that price.

For that price I don't think you'll find anything close to that. However, I have to say you may be taking your chances by ordering from that site. It doesn't exactly look reliable, but that's just me.

Obviously the quality of the parts will be pretty questionable due to that price (a legitimate franky replica should cost around $700-800 in parts and materials), but as you said, if it's for your son and he's just starting out, it would be a cool project to do together.

If you get that and the quality is half way decent, let me know because now I'm really curious.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I bought this kit: http://byoguitar.com/Guitars/Electri...__BYO-EVH.aspx two summers ago as my second electric. It is currently striped up (see my "should I stripe/paint my EVH knock off" and it couldn't be much better. I added a $40 peavey wolf pup into the bridge and replaced the stock bridge with a Floyd special. Fantastic guitar. They do not have a Franky style, but they do have a 5150 for $174 I believe.

Yeah, I saw that one. But, we really want to build a Franky. I already have a 5150 style guitar.

As long as you don't expect much from the parts for that price should be ok.

OK, so after looking around for some parts, I'm thinking maybe double that price in the end. Although I don't need it to be the highest quality guitar ever, I would like to have decent quality.

I found this body, http://www.guitarfetish.com/XGP-Prof...h_p_12618.html. What do you guys think?

The new Slick guitars, from Guitar fetish, are cheap & highly rated.
They have a one humbucker/strat type model, that might work as an EVH project.
They use a tiny bit of paint on each guitar, so you can strip it and do something else.
I'm not a Floyd kinda guy, so i like the fixed/standard bridge.

Ah I thought he laid em out and said where he got them.

Also I emailed him awhile back. He said he was using bodies from bestguitarparts.com. But guitarfetish seems much cheaper

You will have to do some rerouting on that body if you want to put a humbucker in it, but other than that it should work.

I've been looking at doing a RBW franky for a while, and it seems that getting a good neck and body are the biggest hurdles. Everything after that you can find pretty easily.

OK, so my next question would be "What wood for the body?" I already have a Northern Ash body, so I'd like to go with something a bit lighter, and easier to paint. Alder, Basswood, Poplar?

I striped up an old Fender Squier which I think is an Alder body. It takes a few coats of Duplicolor, but it was really easy to paint and the body is really light.

I've built a couple of guitars with bodies and necks from GuitarFetish and they turned out great. Even got a GFS VEH pickup and a Floyd Rose from them, they seem pretty good to deal with.
