Default Samsung warns customers not to discuss personal information in front of smart TVs

Samsung has confirmed that its "smart TV" sets are listening to customers' every word, and the company is warning customers not to speak about personal information while near the TV sets.

The company revealed that the voice activation feature on its smart TVs will capture all nearby conversations. The TV sets can share the information, including sensitive data, with Samsung as well as third-party services.

The news comes after Shane Harris at The Daily Beast pointed out a troubling line in Samsung's privacy policy: "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party."

Samsung has now issued a new statement clarifying how the voice activation feature works. "If a consumer consents and uses the voice recognition feature, voice data is provided to a third party during a requested voice command search," Samsung said in a statement. "At that time, the voice data is sent to a server, which searches for the requested content then returns the desired content to the TV."

The company added that it does not retain or sell the voice data, but it didn't name the third party that translates users' speech. —Meghan DeMaria

They don't retain or sell it, but they pretty much give it to the third party, which then does.....what?

It's not. It was on BBC news this morning. Apparently, it is mentioned in the accompanying 'privacy clause', but let's face it, how many of us really read the small print?

According to the coverage this morning, the data goes not to a human being - but to an American company whose technology 'translates' the various voices / accents / dialects into a recognisable form on which the TV can then act. Apparently, this data is not retained by that company - or Samsung - in any way.

Forgive me, but I have my doubts - I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that it is subsequently being used for scurrilous purposes.

In any case, I won't be getting a Smart TV. In fact, I'd steer clear of any devices containing voice-recognition software - it's all liable to be appropriated in some way or another.

Sounds like Twilight Zone stuff here.

Funny how Samsung failed to mention ANY of this when they started selling their new lines of TV's. For that, they should be dealt a superior fine for not informing people of the risk of owning such TV's. 3rd parties always equal a 4th party, and 5th party and so on.... Those parties include hackers, the Fed's, and law enforcement of all branches, I'm sure.

Wish someone would torpedo the shit out of these types of spying ideas against citizens. But, I'm sure it will never be dealt with they way in needs to be. Nothing is secure anymore.

Yeah, continue to wipe your asses with our constitution.

Good. Maybe VH won't hear your destain for the release of the remastered remasters.

Seriously, that WTF Samsung? I'm sure my Vizio is no different. If a smart TV would do things that need to be done around the house, I'd be ok with them. Yards and Laundry don't do it themselves.

To say the least, you should have to address the TV before it starts listening. For example, you should have to name it and pronounce that name before any commands are responded to and name a command to stop it from listening. Corporations, government and people in general just don't understand how important privacy is anymore and it pisses me off more than anything about modern technology.

In order to activate the voice-recognition capability, there is a microphone icon that one has to 'click'. If you don't activate it, then data is not recorded and / or sent off to the relevant company...

And how many of us would believe that???

Not exactly...apparently, the feature responds when it "detects" a specific-command vocal phrase such as "Hi TV", and then the feature is activated. Also apparently, someone is doing some serious damage control/"nothing to see here" work on behalf of Samsung, as this third-party article posted on FOX (yes, FOX) News dot com would indicate.

Of course, if it can "detect" a specific phrase, how do it do it? Because it listens for it....muahahahahahaha.....
