    Default Ebony or maple?

I want to replace the neck on my tobacco sunburst Peavey Wolfgang. In 16 years of constant playing, it's gotten very dark and stained. Plus, the frets have seen better days. Should I replace it with the original maple or go for ebony? I've never played an ebony fretboard.

I'd go with maple , as it's what I've used 99% of the time . The EVH Wolf guitars just look better with a maple board IMO . Of course it's all a personal choice .
You said you've never played an ebony board ? I'd experiment with a cheaper/more disposable guitar than a Peavey Wolfgang . That way , if you don't care for it , you haven't 'tainted' such a cool piece of gear .

Can you not have the cleaned up a bit and the frets redressed ? Might be cheaper and less hassle in the long run .
    My $0.02.

I've tried cleaning the neck using Murphys soap and 0000 steel wool. The stains won't come out. Perhaps there is a better way?

That I'm not sure about , my friend .
Better to wait for some of the other guitar gurus on here to chime in ...

Your not talking about the spots and discoloration on the back of the neck right? That's the Birdseye and part of the wood. A desirable quality.

Yes, the dark discoloration. Not actually the spots, since those are a birdseye characteristic. You can easily see the discoloration on the full guitar picture. At the top, by the nut, is the original lighter color of the neck.

If the neck is smooth, leave the stains.
But it needs a refret. You could lightly dress up the sides of the frets. Simply get a finger nail file and put double layers of masking tape on each side of the fret bar. Then lightly clean up the sides. The goal is to remove the rough sides and file a point towards the top of the fret bar. This will buy you some time until you locate someone to do a proper fret job.

You dont wanna make frets completely pointed. Just enough to reduce the indents some.

    Guitar looks badsss to me

The only places near me that I can think of are Sam Ash and Guitar Center. Does anyone know if Musikraft does refrets?

I wouldn't touch it. It looks cool. But I like that dirty look. Refret it though.

+1 to leaving it alone. That's part of the character of these unfinished maple necks.

That's a great looking guitar. In a world where people are paying extra to have guitars fake relicd, you've got one 100% authentic... I'd leave it!
