Default Republican Lawmaker - Childbirth Resulting From Rape Is Beautiful

A Republican state lawmaker said Thursday that women who become pregnant from sexual assault should not be exempt from an anti-abortion measure, because childbirth resulting from rape is "beautiful."

"Obviously rape is awful," West Virginia Del. Brian Kurcaba (R) said during a committee hearing on a new abortion restriction, according to David Gutman, a Charleston Gazette reporter. "What is beautiful is the child that could come from this."

Kurcaba, a financial adviser, was elected to the House of Delegates in November.

The bill would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. State House Republicans revived the proposal after West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D) vetoed it in 2014. The House Health Committee voted down an exception for rape and incest victims on Thursday and approved the bill for a full vote in the House.

Kurcada's comment about rape and abortion is similar to an argument made by U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock of Indiana in October 2012. "I think that even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said in a debate.

Mourdock lost the election to a Democrat weeks later, and the GOP's big losses in elections that year were largely attributed to controversial rape comments made by Republican candidates.

The most notorious remark that election season came from U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri.

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said of pregnancy. "But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

Well, he at least did admit that rape was awful.

Yep, this is a great representative from my great state of West Virginia. Makes me so proud. West Virginia is a unique state and has had its share of political problems. Our legislature was Democratic for 80 years, until this last election cycle, however, the majority of those 80 years these guys were pro-coal Democrats.

Please read this excellent Ed Rabel article published just a few days before the Nov. election:

    http://www.wvgazette.com/article/201...ICLE/141029158

Well, the old fuckers and bigots sure did vote in a new Republican legislature. You would see "80 is enough" bumper stickers on cars and signs in yards screaming Obama's war on coal. In fact, every commercial and every campaign slogan had no substance other than, "No Obama." Seriously, that was IT. No substantive policy issues, no detailed agenda on how to bring jobs, how to clean up our water supply. The debate between Shelly Moore Capito and Natalie Tennant was a glaring example that Capito had nothing to say other than Obama is bad.

So, ok, this state HATES Obama. With a passion. So we were doomed from the get go.

So what pray tell has been our newly elected GOP agenda???
    http://blogs.charlestondailymail.com...eks-crossbows/

Abortion, guns (including crossbows!), and House Bill 2754 to actually gut regulations of the Aboveground Storage Tank Act that was passed last year after a dilapidated above ground storage tank holding MCHM spilled into our water supply leaving 300,000 residents without water for weeks! They also passed a bill that repealed the state’s Alternative Renewable Energy Portfolio Act. Coal companies have been polluting our waters, stripping our mountains, and leaving our residents with nothing while their profits have left this state for over a hundred years. And we get douche nozzle's like Del. Brian Kurcaba (R) who is so concerned about the babies until they leave the womb. Well what happens when you have people voting soley based on ideological hatred and the falsehood that Obama was killing all the coal jobs - when the reality of mechanization, technology, and the natural gas industry's boom killed them - then you get carpetbaggers and do-nothing's running the state. We get what we deserve.

Well coal is down but not out but your side is winning Gabby. The new environmental laws are really hurting electric companies especially those that have old old coal burning plants. I recently lost money on a individual bond I held with a subsidiary of Edison Int in Illinois. They decided to declare bankruptcy rather than up grade facilities on their plants. So the upgrades eventually get done after they legally screw all the suppliers, stock, and bond holders. After that the users get screwed with higher costs for the mandated upgrades. It used to be investing in our nations power companies was money in the bank no mas.

This state has never been winning. And neither will any of the other ones once their land, water, and air are ravished. This isn't a short-term game.

I hear Solyndra has a really good alternative to coal complete with federal funding!

Eventually we will convert to non coal and non oil but the process is going to be very painful and as usual the people in the middle will get screwed the big boys will survive as always. Good articles thanks for letting me see how numbers can be manipulated and justice department investigations by the party in power can find no wrong doing.

just from a business model, if i gave you 32 billion dollars and you told me that you might be able to make 5 billion in profit on it in 25 years I'd laugh you out of my office.

Oh goody, we get to nitpick a rather small point made in my entire post about crazy Republican lawmakers gutting regulations that prevent MCHM from spilling into our waterways, and divert it into about old news item about Solyndra. The entire conservative community were giddy with the news that this one company was flopping, but now that the renewable energy loan guarantee program is turning a profit after weathering years of misinformation that tried to show Solyndra as representative of the program's failure, it still isn't good enough. But as NPR reported:

Overall, the agency has loaned $34.2 billion to a variety of businesses, under a program designed to speed up development of clean-energy technology. Companies have defaulted on $780 million of that -- a loss rate of 2.28 percent. The agency also has collected $810 million in interest payments, putting the program $30 million in the black.

When Congress created the loan program under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, it was never designed to be a moneymaker. In fact, Congress imagined there would be losses and set aside $10 billion to cover them.
But a profit still isn't good enough, because we like to make false projections for futures in 25 years. So in 25 years, if in fact, the DOE's renewable energy plan makes even more of a profit, will conservatives admit it as a success? Don't bet on it!

all that said, stories like this bring out the idiots from both sides of the poltiical spectrum. Those on the right did it for years by handpicking failures from a huge portfolio of companies that were helped and ignorantly painted the entire program as a failure.. And now the left will see the word profit in an article and are dumb enough to think that this means the program is a huge success. Neither side seems capable of reading an entire article and thinking about what the information actually means.

it's nothing to do with a profit not being good enough. It's the inability of people, on both sides, to not see a story except through their ridiculous political lens.

In summary, you can argue the merits of profit from the loans if you like, but you can't claim that the program has been a dismal failure anymore.
