Default UK First Country to Allow Creation of "Three Person Babies"

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-31069173

MPs have voted in favour of the creation of babies with DNA from two women and one man, in an historic move.

The UK is now set to become the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies from three people.

In a free vote in the Commons, 382 MPs were in favour and 128 against the technique that stops genetic diseases being passed from mother to child.

During the debate, ministers said the technique was "light at the end of a dark tunnel" for families.

A further vote is required in the House of Lords. It everything goes ahead then the first such baby could be born next year.

Proponents said the backing was "good news for progressive medicine" but critics say they will continue to fight against the technique that they say raises too many ethical and safety concerns.

Estimates suggest 150 three-person babies could be born each year.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "We're not playing god here, we're just making sure that two parents who want a healthy baby can have one."

The method, which was developed in Newcastle, should help women like Sharon Bernardi, from Sunderland, who lost all seven of her children to mitochondrial disease.

Ms Bernadi said was "overwhelmed" by the decision.

Mitochondria are the tiny compartments inside nearly every cell of the body that convert food into useable energy. They have their own DNA, which does not affect characteristics such as appearance.

Defective mitochondria are passed down only from the mother. They can lead to brain damage, muscle wasting, heart failure and blindness.

The technique uses a modified version of IVF to combine the DNA of the two parents with the healthy mitochondria of a donor woman.

It results in babies with 0.1% of their DNA from the second woman and is a permanent change that would be passed down through the generations.

Not sure what I think of that. I hate to ever use the slippery slope argument, but this to me could be scary if not limited in scope.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I think that applies to lots of things though - virtually every new venture on which we embark has the potential to be "scary" - we just have to ensure that the relevant safeguards are in place, and stringently observed. Provided that is the case (and I have no reason to think otherwise) I feel it's a fantastic achievement, to be honest, and one that will hopefully pave the way for all sorts of cures for the most horrible and cruel of diseases.

""We're not playing god here, we're just making sure that two parents who want a healthy baby can have one."

so when has there ever been a guarantee that you have a right to expect a healthy child?

will they sell extended warranties on these designer babies so that if the child should develop a serious disease you could trade him in for a new one?

and what about the child born of this technique, has there been any studies to determine how it would affect their fertility and ability to have healthy babies?

The children born to this technique will have no more or less by way of fertility issues than the rest of the population. However, the mitochondrial diseases prevented by way of the process will have been ameliorated, and therefore not passed down to future generations. Of course, this doesn't eliminate the possibility of other forms of inherited disease being passed down, so no, I don't think this is in any way akin to creating "designer babies".

I also think the "playing God" argument often posited is a red herring. We already "play God" in multifarious ways when it comes to preventing, treating, or curing human health problems, as well as 'postponing' death, when the natural order would dictate otherwise.

I don't like it, but what else is new?

And does "mitochondrial" make anyone else think of "midichlorian"?

I have no biological children primarily because I was informed that I had a 50/50 chance of passing a fatal neurological disease to any children I might have....it's a long story but nevertheless I chose not to take the chance.

    doesn't mean I didn't raise a kid tho

Don't get me wrong - I absolutely agree with you on that.

I just think if we have the knowledge and skills to eliminate horrible diseases, wouldn't we want to do that? Assuming, of course, as I said, that there are stringent safeguards in place? I mean, we're doing it all the time, 'going against nature' in our efforts to make lives better (hence the vaccination threads that have popped up lately).

    That is fascinating.

I envy what future generations will enjoy.

I understand the concerns people have about playing the big guy upstairs but DNA research should be full steam ahead....and space programs....and for f's sake a real Jurassic Park in my lifetime would be nice.
