Default Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird to publish a 2nd novel

Wow, after 55 years and winning the Pulitzer for her only published novel, Harper Lee will publish Go Set a Watchman which sees Scout in her life as a grown woman

I will definitely buy this book

I'll go ahead and be the one to say it.

Incredibly over rated book. I didn't read it until later in life (I've made an attempt to read all the "Classics"), so maybe that skews my view on it a little, but after a nice start, it just becomes very predictable to me. And I don't even think she is that great a writer. Even something like Moby Dick, which I found dragged on forever and I struggled to get through, the mastery of the English language presented to me on the page was impressive.

Not saying it is not a good book, but it doesn't deserve all the accolades it received(s) in my humble opinion, there are a gazillion better novels out there.

I found it to be a pretty useful novel for 9th graders. They were able to understand it and with a lot of support material, understand what race relations were like not that long ago. They seemed to enjoy it too.

For me, it is a very relevant novel, I just don't think it deserves the accolades it receives.

It was a gutsy book for 1960 It tackled race relations and rape in an era where one was a problematic talk and the other was swept under the rug

by today's standards we look read that and think " what's the big deal...these conversations happen freely all the time now" and we have Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird (among others) to thank for that.

That's why I said it's a relevant book, I just don't think it is an amazing piece of literature.

I'd agree that in terms of literary technique, it's not the most impressive piece of writing ever created - but in terms of the historical and cultural context in which it was written and published, it was most certainly an "amazing" book, and thereby deserving of the accolades it received at the time.

The Bonfire of the Vanities, could there be a worse screen interpretation of a great book?

Jose Saramago's Blindness was made into an bad film starring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. It was on SYFY network the other night and it was as unwatchable, noisy, poorly written, badly shot as I remembered.

Bonfire of the Vanities stands alongside Ellroy's American Tabloid as my favourite novel of all time. I don't think the movie was utterly awful, but it certainly didn't live up to the book.

I follow a lot of publishing social media, and there's been a mixed reaction to this news. On one hand, many are very excited to see a new book from Harper Lee after all these years. On the other, some are questioning whether this is being done with her full consent. Apparently this "new" book was written decades ago, but Lee never allowed it out into the wild. Lee was never comfortable with all the trappings of being a wildly successful author, and her sister shielded her from most the exploitation she might have suffered otherwise. The sister passed away not long ago, and Lee is reportedly in poor physical and mental health, so if she wouldn't allow the book out while she was fully compis mentis, why is it happening now? I guess we'll never know.

They were saying this morning on the news that she wrote this book before To Kill a Mockingbird.

But that was on ESPN, so take that with a HUGE amount of salt.

yes this is being done with her approval and consent.

She is actually very excited about it and distributed it among trusted colleagues first for their opinions as to it's quality

It was discovered attached to an original manuscript of Mockingbird that was in a family safety deposit box. Harper Lee thought any full manuscript was long lost, but when it turned up, she agreed to it's publishing

Just breaking: Sammy Hagar responds to new Lee novel

When asked if he thinks Harper Lee is out of inspiration, he replied: "I think there's zero inspiration and zero creativity. If there was any, she would write a new novel. What does the band do? When Chickenfoot got together for our first album, we were four new guys and we got together and wrote ten, twelve songs and made an album."

"What I've read so far, I wasn't impressed with at all, personally," said Hagar. Who is Harper Lee today? I don't know, I don't think the fans are going to be happy with it. I couldn't care less if it's the biggest novel of the year; that wouldn't be important to me. What is important to me is that, as artists, why would you do that? She hasn't released a novel since 1960. To me, it makes a strange statement, it kind of says, 'I don't have anything, I'm not a writer anymore, I'm not creative.' Isn't it a strange statement to you?"
