Default All guitars used in the studio VH1-5150

I know this is a huge undertaking but I know that the knowledge on this board will bring this all together.

I'll start with the very easiest on of all.

    Van Halen (1978)
Runnin' with the Devil: 1975 Ibanez Destroyer
    Eruption: Frankenstein
You Really Got Me: 1975 Ibanez Destroyer
    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love: Frankenstein
    I'm the One: Frankenstein
    Jamie's Cryin': 1975 Ibanez Destroyer
Atomic Punk: Frankenstein (solo overdub guitar?)
    Little Dreamer: Frankenstein
Ice Cream Man: Dave's acoustic (unknown); Ed -- Frankenstein
    On Fire: 1975 Ibanez Destroyer

    Let's keep it rolling.

I want to say that there was a breakdown of this in either The Inside magazine (the Eddie's guitars issue) or a Guitar World magazine.

Cool thread, but why stop at 5150? Why not compile a list of all known guitars throughout all the VH records?

These are based solely on memory, so feel free to correct/amend.

    1984
    Jump - Frankenstein
    Panama - Frankenstein
    Top Jimmy - Ripley
Drop Dead Legs - Flying V
Hot For Teacher - Flying V
I’ll Wait - I think I’ve heard this was a vintage Strat, possibly the same as the “5150” Strat?

    5150
    Get Up - Steinberger
Dreams - Kramer Ferrington Acoustic on Intro
    Summer Nights - Steinberger
Best of Both Worlds - “5150” Strat
Love Walks In - “5150” Strat on Solo

    OU812
Cabo Wabo - 12 String Fender
Finish What Ya Started - Strat direct into board?

    FUCK
Judgement Day - Last known recording w/ 5150 Kramer
Runaround - Fender Tele on rhythm, EVH prototype on lead
    316 - Chet Atkins Acoustic
Top of the World - Flying V

    Balance
I’d be surprised if this entire album wasn’t EBMM EVH, with the exception of the “Big Fat Money Solo” being a 335?

    BOV1
Me Wise Magic - Peavey Wolfgang w/ TransTrem

    VH3
Without You - Definitely sounds like it’d be a P90 Wolfgang similar to the one used in the music video, but that's just my own speculation...

    ADKOT
Wolfgang Stealth on all tracks except…
You and Your Blues - Strat on solo and lead dubs
    Blood and Fire - Ripley
    As Is - Wolfgang w/ D2H
Honeybabysweetiedoll - There’s some sustainer work in here, possibly the cherry sunburst Peavey Wolfgang for the 2004 tour? I’ve seen pics of it in 5150 recently.

    Yup, you're right!

I just pulled that mag out and it looks like the only one we're missing from that is the '62 SG on Dirty Movies.

    Sticking with the trans trem.

    F.U.CK.
    Pleasure Dome:Steinberger

I'll also bet money it's on 5150 Inside and probably the solo from Why Can't This Be Love.

I also have a theory about 1984. I think every song in A440 is the Flying V.

Dirty Movies was a Les Paul Jr double cutaway if I remember correctly, but may have been SG. The solo at least on Everybody Wants Some was a 335, I remember and interview where Ed stated that he could play fast on 335's and used one for some solos on WACF. From pictures that Ive seen of the recording studio for WACF, there is the Destroyer, Bumblebee(However he has stated that he did not like the sound of this one, so Im guessing that it did not make it onto any final cuts) a Les Paul(Burst) and an unpainted single hum bucker homemade strat that may have been used and then painted to be who knows what(Unchained maybe?)

Yup, but think he said 335 was on solo of "Cradle"

Ed saying he didn't like the Bee -- or the way it sounded or whatever exactly he said -- was only said because of his frustration with Grover Jackson at the time. It's been repeated ad nauseum and even I held on to that statement for decades -- because Ed would never lie, would he?!

Ed loved Wayne Charvel. Wayne was a trained perfectionist and Ed was a self-trained try-anything kind of guy. Wayne loved what Ed did to build the Frankenstein, but wanted to perfect Ed's idea for him, so he had a body made that did not have all of the empty Strat pickup cavities. The Bee was for all I know the very first ever Strat-style guitar lathed for a single humbucker. (I've never seen evidence to the contrary.) Almost down to the exact month that the Bee was delivered, Wayne sold the company to Grover Jackson.

Grover then went about making more Bee's without Ed's permission -- the most famous of which is owned and still played by Joe Bonamossa. Ed was extremely pissed -- he was super protective of his gear and secrets, etc. He asked Grover to stop. He didn't. Ed actually had to file a formal lawsuit against Grover to make him stop. The issue was really just the stripes, but Ed also felt Grover copped the body design without giving Ed a single bit of credit. Ed put a humbucker in a Strat body, end of story.

Since the Bee said "Charvel" on the headstock, Ed felt that he was simply doing promotion for Grover who he now hated with a passion. I'm not sure how much of the 1979 tour anyone is familiar with -- but the Bee was an absolutely awesome machine. He played it every single night on the tour -- although he swapped the neck out with a logo-free headstock. He sure as hell did not dislike the guitar at that point.

Ed was always asked about his guitars. He made the choice to badmouth the Bee in retribution for Grover being an asshole. If he didn't like the guitar, it sure was odd that he hung onto it for so many years and I doubt he'd have put it in Dime's coffin if it wasn't in fact a really special guitar to him privately.

I understand why Ed said what he said, he was pissed. It tarnished the legacy of the Bee though.

The Bee went with Dimebag because it was always his favorite guitar. I seriously doubt that if Dime's favorite guitar was the Frankenstein that guitar would be with him. I personally think the Bee didn't mean that much to him. He probably regrets not giving it too Wolfgang now.
