Default Van Halen last Legendary Rock Band?

So I'm just putzin' around listening to some of my favorite music when it struck me that Van Halen is the last of the truly legendary rock bands. Which is sad because they came out in 1978 when I was three. I can't think of anyone after them that I would consider "legendary."

Damn what happened to rock and roll? At least of the hard rock variety?

Anyway, here's my list of legendary:

    The Doors
    Jimi Hendrix
    Cream
    Led Zeppelin
    AC/DC
    Black Sabbath
    ZZ Top
    Scorpions

Almost 40 years since a legendary type band in my favorite music genre came on the scene. It'd be like Joe Montana being the last great quarterback in the NFL. What a fucking shame...

I guess you could throw in Metallica but who am I missing that came after Van Halen? Any ides?

The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Depends on your definition of legendary...

All respect to the scorpions but if they make the list then Guns N Roses has too as well.

After Guns you might hear people say Nirvana. They would be the last band that had the impact to at least qualify them for discussion.

What is sad is that most of us will witness the death of the last major bands...and it's being called "dad rock" by the kids now.*

Legendary bands do not exist anymore. The American i doling of our society has seen to that.
Can't sing? No problem auto tune
Can't play? No problem got a computer and can sample the great bands that came before you
    Can't write? We'll hire a song writer
Got tits? We can make you on idol
Gay male? No problem here's your contract
Hip hop is the worst offense. All the shit sounds the same, and God forbid if they don't have a Mac when they hit the stage, no show
But if your are desirable and fuckable or came up on the "streets" than a contract you can have

Oh and G N' R of course, I know they didn't last long but they were the biggest band in the world for a time.

Yeah, it was a shame. I remember seeing them and thinking it was like watching another Zep or Stones level band. It was disappointing they could not fully realize their potential.

The shows I saw were scary good though. One was the infamous Nassau show. Crowd was getting hostile after waiting 3 hours, they open with a song nobody heard before and he does a rant and has the crowd eating out of his hand. It was like watching a dictator in action.

Seems the question was more in terms of bands that currently exist. GnR not on the list as they don't exist anymore. I'd say you have to look at A. do they still exist and B. could they sell to near capacity an arena tour.

So, what, U2? Hell no not Def Leppard (I love them, but truly legendary, did the Foos call Joe Elliot?). And are we talking the US? Put the Stones on there, they still tour. Maybe Aerosmith, they sell arenas right?

Pyromania and Hysteria were 2 of the biggest rock records ever. I wore multiple copies of each out. They were basically the soundtrack to my childhood. So I'd call Lep legendary. Cheap Trick is another one. And Kiss. I never thought much about Kiss either way until about the last year or so when I went back and listened to their catalog. Under all the hype and BS, there's some really good records.

Yeah, I forgot a few. Obviously The Who and the Stones have to be in there, like 'em or not. So would Aerosmith and I agree about Guns other than they were such a short period and then they imploded - Appetite is and all time great album though.

I don't include Nirvana because while their influence was undeniable, I think they were the start of what we see now. When Ed came along it inspired guitarists to try to up their game and become better players. Some may have taken it too far into the realm of ridiculousness, but at least it made people want to become technically more proficient at playing the guitar. Nirvana was the opposite and set the stage for basically the death of innovative or exciting guitar playing.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Someplace teens are playing in a garage with a bunch of Marshalls and write some 70s 80s type originals. They get a gig at a local bar and people go nuts with heavy metal and stunning harmony. They are asked to come back and other clubs in the town hear of them and how they pack a house on Saturday night. However, no recording company will sign them unless they revert to dark death metal or rap rock stuff. They agree to this and become famous singing about suicide and drug abuse with an inaudible sound much like a person vomiting.
EVH 1979: Well, actually it's not much of a vacation, because we run everything ourselves. We design our own album cover, we have to be in the office every day to sign checks - the whole corporation revolves around us. Nothing can be done without our approval. We even have photo approval.
