Default the Mini LP Japanese CD releases…..

Does anyone here own the Japan "mini LP" CD releases of the first 6 albums? You know the ones that come in the cardboard replica sleeves. I just picked them up and was wondering if the mastering of the CDs was any different than the WB Remasters of 2000.

I only have the Japanese "Forever Young" releases of Van Hagar albums and VH3.

They're not mini-LPs, but at least for 5150 and OU812, the sound quality is miles and away better than the US releases. Good volume, dynamics are preserved, and not overly compressed or brickwalled. Bass on OU812 is actually pretty good too. There's been some debate whether they simply boosted the gain, but to my ears they sound like definite remasters. Either way, they're still so much better than the U.S. releases that I have never regretted the high cost of importing them.

The differences in Unlawful and Balance are negligible, considering those discs already sounded pretty good. Although two bonuses you get with Balance are that it comes with the cover with just one head (see my avatar), and it has Crossing Over.

I got VH3 hoping it would be as much of an improvement over the US disc as 5150 and OU812 were. The volume is a little louder (but still dynamic and not overly compressed or brickwalled), which gives the overall album a bit of a fuller sound. Unfortunately, the boost also makes the annoying buzz/hum in the background of some songs all the more noticeable.

I had also hoped that VH3 would have "That's Why I Love You" in CD quality, but alas, it doesn't. ***By the way, if anyone has that song in true lossless quality (not upconverted or transcoded), please PM me. I know it once appeared in lossless quality when the original promo CD it appeared on was passed around Warner, but I have yet to find anyone who has a copy of that disc to get a copy of the song from. I've also always wondered whether the other tracks on the album sounded better on that promo disc than they did on the final CD that was released.

I just got them in the mail. I haven't had the chance yet to pop them in and see if they sound better than the 2000's. But I'll tell you they did an awesome job recreating the original album for these CDs. I got those mini LPs CDs of the Doors catalog a few years back. these are made so much better than those. Shame cool stuff like this never gets released in the US when it comes to Van Halen.

Bumped to get your review.... I'm very curious as to whether the Japan mini-lps are the 2000 remasters or not.

oh yeah i'm not an audiophile but as far as I can tell from my comparisons they sound just like the 2000 remasters. but as i said before the job they did on the packaging is awesome. The WCF CD even has a mini version of the Dave poster as the sleeve just like the original vinyl release back in 1980.

the attention to detail is insane. the back of 1984 is upside down like the original LP. They included the "Pretty Woman" sticker on Diver Down. the inner sleeve for VH1 and VH2 are glossy finish like the LPs, but Fair Warning, DD and 1984 are paper. Which is how the original LPs were too. Really can't say enough good things about the packaging of these. Again, I don't get why WB never releases something cool like this in the US. Of course it would've been better if they had some kind of bonus tracks but I'm not gonna go there.

yeah i was hesitant to buy them. i used to collect VH stuff like crazy going back to like 1984. I have tons of imports, bootlegs, promo items, etc. A few years ago I decided it was time to stop. But when these came out I really wanted to get them. I'm glad I did. They are pretty easy to find on ebay if any of you are looking.

Nice scoop pretty damn cool you got them I can't believe I didn't know about these I absolutely must get them too. Just Googled and searched EBay but couldn't find them quickly.

These appear to have far superior packaging than the other regular 6-Pack rerelease last year. I got that one but they don't even have the full liner notes and inserts.

I know about the other older Japanese black box 6pack from the late 90's or so but idiot that I am didn't buy that one when I saw it I planned to go back and buy it later but it was gone. At the time I saw it in a second hand CD store I just didn't feel like carrying it around as was going to a movie or something.

If you have any other info to add such as the release date. and EBay listing where you found it that would be appreciated.
