Default Best of Volume I Question

Do you think the first 14 tracks on Best of Volume I were the best representations of both eras?

    1. Eruption
    2. ATBL
    3. RWTD
    4. Dance the Night Away
    5. And the Cradle Will Rock
    6. Unchained
    7. Jump
    8. Panama
    9. WCTBL
    10. Dreams
    11. When It's Love
    12. Poundcake
    13. Right Now
    14. CSLY

    New Tracks
    15. Humans Being
    16. CGTSNM
    17. Me Wise Magic

I am surprised BOBW, FWYS, and Not Enough didn't make it. For the Dave era I am surprised Ice Cream Man, Everybody Wants Some, and HFT didn't make it.

Assuming you keep the number of tracks the same, what would you take out? I assume they were trying to balance the most well-known songs with having songs from each album (although they did completely ignore Diver Down).

It seems obvious to me that there would have been a vol 2, that would've included the most glaring omissions. one time I geeked out and made a few lists of what a vol 2 & 3 could look like. Still really bothers the OCD tendencies of my brain that the '04 release didn't follow the format. It's the only VH album I never got. I bought downloads of the three turds I mean songs instead of getting the disc. It was the perfect time, with only a few new tunes, just like 97.

A volume 2 was going to happen, according to Eddie in a couple of interviews. That's why they concentrated on the hits first on vol 1. If there was a Vol 2, you'd see the likes of "Jamies cryin'", "Romeo Delight", "Hot for teacher", etc. I would've preferred this than "Best of both worlds" 8 years later. The only good thing 'bout "BOBW" is that some Hagar tunes were remastered and we got some new Hagar tunes, even though they weren't too good
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

They should've just done 2 CDs since Sammy was out anyways, and he was supposedly the one against it. Being a single-disc, I'd nix the "Volume I" and it should have been:

    1. ERUPTION
    2. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE
    3. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    4. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    5. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
    6. UNCHAINED
    7. JUMP
    8. PANAMA
    9. HOT FOR TEACHER
    10. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE
    11. DREAMS
    12. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    13. WHEN IT'S LOVE
    14. POUNDCAKE
    15. RIGHT NOW
    16. HUMANS BEING
    17. ME WISE MAGIC
    18. CAN'T GET THIS STUFF NO MORE

They could've fit another song. They did for the Japanese version as there was simply enough space left. TOTW would be next on the list. Yeah, it was weird seeing EWS and BOBW omitted, as EWS is bigger than ATCWR and BOBW is arguably Van Hagar's most popular hard rock song. YRGM I can see because it's a cover. HFT...that is just insane. One of their Top 5, maybe even Top 3 biggest songs.

    Video Hits:

    1. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    2. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    3. UNCHAINED
    4. JUMP
    5. PANAMA
    6. HOT FOR TEACHER
    7. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE
    8. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    9. WHEN IT'S LOVE
    10. POUNDCAKE
    11. RIGHT NOW
    12. DREAMS
    13. HUMANS BEING

Hell, they left "Ice Cream Man" off even TBOBW. Should've been on there instead of "Dancing in the Street."

"Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" didn't make TBOBW either which I thought was dumb. I would've have it above "Not Enough" or especially "Feels So Good" or even "Black and Blue."

They squeezed "Strung Out" on there though, although I'm sure that was a mistake. What's up with their Best Of errors anyways? "Strung Out," "Runnin' with the Devil" with the verses mixed up...

Still think "Without You" should have been on TBOBW despite conflicting with the word "both."

Speaking of which, what are your thoughts on "Without You" being on the updated Video Hits Volume 1? Great song, great vid, but fucks everything all up!

For me , the two new songs w/Roth were worth the price of admission alone . They were beyond cool to hear , after going so long without any new VH music with Dave's voice over it .
Bravo to EVH for reaching out and making that happen

I thought the track listing was okay , yet I wish more of the rocking stuff from the Sam years was focused on . The early VH era was well represented though . All the crunchy guitar hits sounded killer !

Wondering what the track listing for Vol. II might look like ...
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

I could have done without the Roth songs and added two more Hagar songs: BOBW and FWYS.

    Really ?
Those two Roth songs were pretty kick ass , by most accounts . Also a cool 'novelty' or 'bonus' feature to help sell the disc - the same as the 3 new Sam tunes on TBOBW set .

For Vol. i , I would've left off Cradle ... and put in Romeo Delight .
On the second half - I would've liked to have seen Summer Nights and possibly 5150 , over Dreams . I do LOVE Dreams though . It's a well written and inspirational song . Not dissing it at all

I understand why the two Roth songs were on there. As a Sammy fan, I am pissed because CGTSNM was his song--Back Door Shuffle.

And the Cradle Will Rock should have made it. I love Romeo Delight, it is one of my favorite Van Halen songs, but it is not a well known song for casual Van Halen fans.

    Volume II
    Ice Cream Man
    Beautiful Girls
    Everybody Wants Some
    So This is Love
Pretty Woman (Hate it, but it would make it.)
    Hot for Teacher
I'll Wait (Hate it, but it would make it.)
    BOBW
    Love Walks In
    FWYS
    Runaround
    Top of the World
    Don't Tell Me
    Not Enough

Really cool list for 'Vol. II' , but I don't think any covers would be included . Not that VH's versions don't absolutely kill it !!!
Of course I could be wrong and I'd still buy it regardless . Good tunes all around

You forgot YRGM. I'd trade "So This Is Love" with "You Really Got Me" and "Not Enough" for "Jamie's Cryin'" which was a pretty big hit. I'd add "Without You" and of course some Truth after it. "Tattoo" and "She's the Woman" I guess. Fuck, throw "Frosty" on there. Just because it rules. Shit, even Rolling Stone liked it and they are clearly not down with VH. Probably because they don't rap.

Need to have an equal number between the eras. I sure wish they had allowed the fanatics on this site to direct the whole Best of stuff.
