Woman Spends 14 Years Photographing World’s Oldest Trees

Beth Moon, a photographer based in San Francisco, has been searching for the world’s oldest trees for the past 14 years. She has traveled all around the globe to capture the most magnificent trees that grow in remote locations and look as old as the world itself.

“Standing as the earth’s largest and oldest living monuments, I believe these symbolic trees will take on a greater significance, especially at a time when our focus is directed at finding better ways to live with the environment” writes Moon in her artist statement.

Sixty of Beth Moon’s duotone photos were published in a book titled “Ancient Trees: Portraits Of Time”. Here you can have a sneak preview of the book, full of strangest and most magnificent trees ever.

we had emerald ash borers destroy so many mature trees on our property. Aside from the pain of the bill from the tree service, there were a few trees in particular that felt like losing a member of the family. There was one that actually made me cry. I couldn't bring myself to be there when they cut it and when I came and saw the stump, I cried.

Yeah. What DD said. I'll be showing that to sweet thing and the boys later. We have a friend locally who spent time in CA working with redwoods. Not sure what exactly but thinking he climbed and studied them for some post grad work maybe. Gonna try to get this link to him.

When I was in elementary school there was an old oak tree that dated back to colonial times. It got hit by lighting and they tried to save it but it died the next year. Kids cried when they sawed it up even made the papers. I took a piece of it home and I still have it.

So you were in elementary school in colonial times when they cut this tree down and made it into paper cause kids cried about it? Pics or it didn't happen.
    Sorry.
That is neat you were able to snag a hunk and still have it. We've got an old oak in our front yard that a local tree "surgeon" advised us to let him remove 18 or so years ago because it was practically dead. We decided to let it die its own death or succumb to weather/whatever. It's best days are certainly behind it but it's been through numerous ice storms and we've had to prune it a couple times on the advice of an actual tree Dr. but it lives on still.

Fascinating! But how old is that tree in the top photo?
