    Default MISSING AIRASIA PLANE

AirAsia Indonesia flight carrying 162 people went missing Sunday after the pilot asked for permission to change course due to weather en route from Indonesia to Singapore, officials said.

Flight QZ8501 en route from Surabaya, Indonesia lost contact with air traffic control at around 7:24 a.m. local time, AirAsia said in a statement.

After hours of scouring the Java Sea for the plane, Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency told Reuters that the search had been suspended for the night. Tatang Zaenuddin of the National Search and Rescue agency told Reuters the search operation would resume at 6 a.m. Monday. NBC News was not immediately able to independently confirm the search had been halted.

Indonesia's acting director general of transportation said there had been no distress signal from the cockpit of the Airbus A320-200.

"We hope we can find the location of the plane as soon as possible, and we hope that God will give us guidance to find it," Djoko Murjatmodjo told reporters. "We don't dare to presume what has happened except that it has lost contact."

The flight had 155 passengers on board, including 16 children and one infant, and two pilots and five crew members, the airline said. Most on board were Indonesian though there were around six foreigners — including three South Koreans, a British national, a Singapore national and a Malaysian. A French national was part of the crew, according to AirAsia.

AirAsia said in a statement that the pilot — who has a total of 6,100 flying hours — had asked to change course because of weather.

Relatives of the passengers of AirAsia flight QZ8501 comfort each other at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014. The AirAsia plane with 161 people on board lost contact with ground control on Sunday after taking off from a provincial city in Indonesia for Singapore, and search and rescue operations were underway.
"The aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to enroute weather before communication with the aircraft was lost," the airline said, adding that the missing plane last underwent maintenance on Nov. 16.

Forecasters told NBC News that "numerous showers and hail" littered the missing jet's flight path.

Airbus confirmed in a statement that the plane was delivered to AirAsia in October 2008 and that it had accumulated about 23,000 flight hours in some 13,600 flights.

Indonesia's Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan told reporters in Surabaya that search-and-rescue efforts now involved the Indonesian army, the national Search and Rescue Agency as well as Singapore and Malaysia, according to The Associated Press. The Search and Rescue Agency's operation chief, Maj. Gen. Tatang Zaenudin, said 200 rescuers had been deployed to the east side of Belitung island, the AP reported. Singapore's military confirmed to NBC News that it had deployed a C-130 plane to assist in search and rescue efforts.

Weeping and distraught relatives of passengers flocked to Singapore's Changi Airport, which set up an area to provide assistance to passengers' family. The country's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, said on Twitter that his "thoughts are with the passengers and their families."

    From CNN:

Bad weather gripped the region at the time, CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam said.
"We still had lines of very heavy thunderstorms" when the plane was flying, Van Dam said. "But keep in mind, turbulence doesn't necessarily bring down airplanes."

CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo said that if there was an onboard emergency, the pilots should have issued a mayday call or a pan-pan call.

"Mayday means you're immediately in danger of losing the flight; pan-pan means that it is urgent but that you can continue the flight and request an alternate route or an alternate airport," said Schiavo, a former inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"It's disconcerting in that the standard procedures for an emergency don't seem to have been deployed," she said.

This one should be found eventually. I guess they have called off the search due to the weather and will resume at daylight.
There was less suspicious circumstances this time, the area is much more confined and the water is very shallow compared to the Indian Ocean. I think this plane will be found relatively quickly. Hopefully.

Man I hope this is just what it looks like, a regular old aviation tragedy. I imagine that it would be the worst kind of hell to be waiting in an airport for a loved one then looking up at the status screen seeing "please see agent".

A navy pilot spotted a shadow on the bottom of the sea that looked to be the aircraft...can you imagine seeing a sight like that? Reminds me of this:

Flights should have been grounded with the level of thunderstorms they were having in the area.

Default Black Box located by divers for Air Aisa QZ8501

JAKARTA, Jan 11 — Indonesian divers today found the crucial black box flight recorders of the AirAsia plane that crashed in the Java Sea a fortnight ago with 162 people aboard, the transport ministry said. But they failed to retrieve it immediately from the seabed because it was stuck under debris from the main body of the plane, the ministry added. “The navy divers in Jadayat state boat have succeeded in finding a very important instrument, the black box of AirAsia QZ8501,” said Tonny Budiono, a senior ministry official. The recorders were at a depth of 30-32 metres (99-106 feet), he said in a statement. Divers will tomorrow try to shift the position of the wreckage to access the black box. “However, if this effort fails, then the team will lift part of the main body using the same balloon technique used earlier to lift the tail,” Budiono added. - See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/ma....QmVY9thf.dpuf

Officials are speaking of a possible explosion on the left side of the plane, probably when the icing that they thought happened reached the inside of the turbine and blew it apart. I know the odds of dying in a plane crash are as slim if not slimmer that winning the lottery but it is always at the back of the mind when I fly and any time I hit heavy turbulence, my nails are digging in the arm rest.

Edit: looks like they are now saying it ws a rapid depressurization that could have caused the explosion. Black box will tell the tale.

AirAsia Flight 8501 'Exploded' Before Impact

    http://news.sky.com/story/1406139/ai...-before-impact

S.B. Supriyadi, a director with the Indonesian national search and rescue agency, said wreckage analysis suggested it had broken apart because the cabin could not adapt to pressure charge caused by the steep descent.

"The cabin was pressurised and before the pressure of the cabin could be adjusted, it went down - boom. That explosion was heard in the area," said Mr Supriyadi.

However, the exact sequence of events is still unconfirmed and an Indonesian transport safety investigator said he disagreed.

Indonesia will not make public preliminary AirAsia crash report one month after the crash of December 28, 2014.
