of course the blow back commenced immediately

we got an American freed and an operative who had been in a Cuban prison for 20 years and sent them 3 of their operatives

in exchange we got an opening of diplomatic relations with a country that only we are continuing to enforce and embargo.

Sometimes in the name of peace you have to give a little,

It is about time. We have screwed up Cuba for so long. Our sanctions only made Castro's grip on that country stronger.

But, every President is afraid of losing Florida for his party, so nothing is done about it.

don't like weighing in too much on American foreign relations but i think this is an excellent decision by President Obama. Very happy that Canada (in whatever way) helped in this process.

And that's what lame duck presidency is all about. I seriously doubt the Cuban population is all of the sudden going to vote Republican because of it though.

I honestly don't have a problem with this. Is Cuba repressive? Sure it is but from what I have heard lately, the United States is worse than any other country out there so who are we to blame?

DD is right. It's a Florida issue.

Cubans in Florida have traditionally voted Republican but Democrats have been making some real inroads in the last decade From 64% republican in 2002 to just 47% in 2013 its a real shift

will be interesting to see how this plays out

Can you imagine all sanctions being lifted on Cuba and it becoming a vacation destination?

Cuba is one of the most popular vacation destinations for Canadians. In my office there are 4 or 5 people that go every year, usually to Varadero. Beautiful beaches. It is usually one of the more economical choices as well which helps.

Has Cuba been a vacation destiny for Americans though? I thought that it would be a diplomatic nightmare and I can't recall anyone ever saying that they were going to Cuba for vacation let alone Cuba for their honeymoon.

    From Nuevo Herald in Florida

Important Cuban exile organizations in Miami on Wednesday branded "serious error" the release of three Cuban spies in exchange subcontractor Alan Gross and US intelligence officer.

The release of three Cuban spies imprisoned in the United States is a "terrible mistake of American foreign policy," said Angel Desfana, president of the Planted organization.
In view Desfana, this "negotiation" between the Cuban government and the US put in a position of weakness the second to give it considered a kind of "blackmail" to be repeated "tomorrow or next year" with another American detained illegally on the island.

Gross, 65, "was the bargaining chip" in the hands of the Castro regime for redemption by the three Cuban spies group called "The Five" members of the "Wasp Network" still serving sentences in the United States insisted the Cuban activist.
In the same vein, the Democratic directory called "grave error" the decision of US President Barack Obama to "release the three terrorists spies of the Castro dictatorship" since this exchange "harms US national security" and "cause of freedom in Cuba."

The Board reacted to the release of Cuban "without having served their sentences" and labeled a "affront to the lives of Mario Manuel de la Peña, Carlos Acosta, Armando Alejandre and Pablo Morales" pilots Brothers to the Rescue who died when their planes were shot down, an act in which he was involved with this spy ring.
The incident occurred on February 24, 1996 when two planes of this body dedicated to the rescue of Cuban rafters were impacted by air-air missiles fired by Cuban MIG fighters in international airspace.

All members of the "Red Avispa" admitted they were agents of the Cuban government "undeclared" against Washington, but said spy on "terrorist groups of exiles" who conspired against President Fidel Castro, not the US government.

For Ramon Saul Sanchez, president of Democracy Movement Gross, imprisoned in Havana for five years and already flies back to his country, "has been used as a bargaining chip with the United States" by Havana.

"The most transcendental now going to be the announcement issued by Obama about impending changes in US foreign policy," said Saul Sanchez, who wondered whether these changes will have a counterpart from "dictators Castro brothers".The Government of Cuba began on Wednesday released "for humanitarian reasons" Gross, imprisoned in Havana for five years and already flies back to his country on a US government plane.
