Default How The Homeless Are Treated In Canada Vs. America

We conducted a Social experiment to see how Canadians and Americans react to the homeless. This experiment was shot in the cold for 30 minutes. We were surprised by how different the responses were.

Not exactly a large enough sample to tell you anything. I walk by homeless people every day and never give them money. I have offered to buy them a meal at times and they rarely accept.

why are there homeless people in Canada? why don't you just buy them all houses what with your superior economy and your superior social programs and all

just buy them houses god dammit! that's not too much to ask of such a country.

and cars too, cause they will need cars to get to their houses.

When my ex-hub and I lived in Hereford city centre, there was a Maccy D's across the road, and a homeless gentleman who had made the alley running alongside it his home. My ex-hub used to buy him a couple of burgers almost every day - and they became quite pally. In fact, I started to get concerned that he might invite him to stay...I'm reasonably liberal-minded, but I draw the line at strange men, with 'habits', making themselves at home in my house.

You feed them and they're like stray cats, you'll never get rid or them. If you're concerned, give to a homeless shelter, soup kitchen etc.

Actually, the feds were responsible for a lot of homelessness in the 80's. They drastically reduced transfer payments to the provinces, which resulted in a reduction of mental health services and closed numerous institutions, including housing for people with mental illness. Many of those people ended up on the streets...

And the feds also provide funding through the CMHC for provincial low income housing initiatives.

Way to de-humanize them. I have often bought meals for the homeless, and no one has ever followed me home...and I ALWAYS acknowledge their presence through a nod, or a smile, or a hello, and tell them I wish I could help just so they know I care.

I actually prefer to give directly instead of to an organization. That ensures that my money is going to where I want it to go. I buy them something to eat and they eat. Not ALL homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics. Many have mental problems. The lack of mental health services around the country is criminal. Too many nimby's is the reason why we have no mental institutions anymore. So what do we do? We have police officers arrest these people and put them in jail. Asinine.

I prefer to give directly too. Many won't go to shelters because they are more dangerous than the streets. If they are First Nations, I also gift them with tobacco.
