Default What do you look for in a band?

Was out dining, and what I'm pretty sure a Foo Fighters song came on (think it's the one where Dave is in an airplane) and I was thinking about the negative comments people have posted on the Foo Fighters recently. I don't know much about the Foo Fighters (like the airplane song, dislike the "Best Of Me" song and the one they made in the limo with ale my sounded like noise to me), but as far as a rock band goes, they seem to have a lot they do right going by the things people typically post. So I was wondering, what do you like in a band?

I like something I can sing along to, from a voice that doesn't annoy me. The lyrics don't have to be Shakespeare, but I don't really care for the puerile stuff. I like songs I can relate to. I'm can relate to heartbreak and cars; "when the dogs begin to smell her - not so much. And it takes a special act to pull off profanity - Guns 'n Roses, yes. Buck cherry, no. Don't care much for songs about drugs unless they are cautionary (and for goodness sake, don't sing about how bad drugs are and then die of a drug overdose. Yes, I'm talking to you, Jimmy McCullough).

I like musicians who can play, but I like a clean sound. Don't need 50 notes when 5 will do, don't need 15 guitars when 1 will do. I think that's why Van Halen is one of the few "heavy" bands that I was drawn to too - Dave could write about the same old stuff in his own way, and Ed could play the hell out of the guitar, but he didn't go out of his way to show off. Same thing with Tom Scholz. Also a big fan of a good drum and bass sound.

I like a lot of bands, in all different genres - from my pop and disco roots, to blues rock, hard rock, punk rock, country and country-rock. Never got much into the hair bands. I found grunge frustrating but did dig some of the tunes (even though I had no idea what they were going on about). Modern production techniques tend to leave me flat, and I wish the old bands had never embraced them.

I'd agree with you on that !
Music touches people differently , and we like what we like . That's why I'm pig headed with my music ; couldn't care less who disses Roth/Hagar/Cherone/Bon Jovi / Motley Crue / Ozzy / Whitesnake / Cinderella / Poison / WASP/ etc.

I dig them , for the most part ... ha ha

I'm a fan bands who write songs that just "move" me in some fashion. I'm into catchy riffs, hooks, melodies, harmonies, breakdowns and guitar solos. No wonder I sort of like that Van Halen band ...

A capable singer whose voice doesn't make me cringe. Melodies, with fat drums and bass.

I'd like to add to mine "a sense of humor." I can't stand musicians who take themselves too seriously. I can't stand anyone who takes themselves too seriously.

There really is something to be said for someone who has the ability to laugh at himself/herself.

Good story telling. Good song writing. Good musicianship. Great energy on stage. The ability to translate from or transcend the studio performance. That is why The Avett Brothers are my favorite band, now.

You must be a big fan of Motorhead.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

    What DD just said: hooks.

Something I also like in a band is some sort brotherhood "feel" to it all. Two examples:
    1 The Ramones - all surnamed Ramone...leather jackets...mod-ish hair...etc.
    2. Generalissimo - same thing. They have this "statist" thing going on. They take themselves seriously but they don't take themselves too seriously. http://www.generalissimo.mu. Love 'em.

Cheap Trick had that heartthrob/nerdy dudes thing. The Beatles wore suits on stage. Image can mean a lot, and if I can relate to their image and even their "ideology", then I'm probably going to be a much more dedicated fan than if I just like their music.

Depends on the genre for me. I don't expect thrash to have the same melodic sensibilities as pop. I look at music like food. I love steak and I love ice cream. However the qualities I want in a prepared steak is different than eating some Chubby Hubby Ice Cream. Pop should have delicious choruses. Country should leave an aftertaste. Jazz should be interesting and non traditional. Heavy Metal should scare the shit out of you like Indian.

Songwriting though is the key. If you wrote it, you get props because I honestly don't respect bands or artists that sing other peoples music. A cover song here and there is fine. An artist who relies on these people is like painting by numbers the Mona LIsa. I give far more credit to an artist like Taylor Swift even though she isn't a great singer than say Mariah Carey who is incredible. Art requires you to create something from nothing. Reading words isn't art.

Thats why I look for in all genres of music. Talent.
