Default The anti-American 'Pledge of Allegiance

A professor at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, Charles Angeletti, has rewritten the entire pledge and highlights the new “Pledge” as part of his American Civilization Class. The story appeared on "Fox and Friends” Tuesday morning, but since the “pledge” is so offensive they only read the first two lines.

I pledge allegiance to and wrap myself in the flag of the United States Against Anything Un-American,” reads Angeletti's version. “And to the Republicans for which it stands, two nations, under Jesus, rich against poor, with curtailed liberty and justice for all except blacks, homosexuals, women who want abortions, Communists, welfare queens, treehuggers, feminazis, illegal immigrants, children of illegal immigrants, and you, if you don't watch your step.

The tenured professor replied, “We’re very racist, we’re very repressive, we’re very Christian oriented, we don’t tolerate other kinds of thinking in this country” and so because of American’s racism and repression, in his opinion, he rewrote the pledge as a “spoof” on the traditional “Pledge of Allegiance” and uses it as, “a satirical pledge aimed at getting students to question their nation’s leadership.”

A freshman, Steven Farr, who took Angeletti’s class this year, disagreed with the professor’s explanation. “This was an attempt to propagandize an entire classroom of young adults,” whether they agreed with the pledge or the “lesson” there-in or not, Farr said. More students agree with Farr’s assessment of the pledge than with Angeletti’s, according to the academic website

Ratemyprofessor.com which allows students to give feedback to prospective students looking to take a particular class or teacher. The reviews on the academic site reveal that although Angeletti is an easy grader, unless of course you disagree with his opinion – in which case he docks their grades, neither he nor his class is deserving of an A. The student reviewers mostly grade him as “Poor.”

I think it sounds like quite an interesting lesson, personally-speaking! When I was teaching I'd occasionally do stuff along similar lines - get the kids thinking critically; open up discussion...With topics like this, my modus operandi would be not to try to indoctrinate students in any way, but instead try to foster an atmosphere of respectful open-ness, which encourages students to listen to alternative viewpoints and articulate their own, hopefully making for an intelligent debate.

Mind you, over here, we don't have pledges or written constitutions, or the like...I'd probably have to use a Tetley Tea advert or a speech from "Four Weddings and a Funeral" - something terribly British like that, over which we could really get our knickers in a twist!

I would suggest that if that was his intention, a better way to stimulate creative thinking would be to ask the class members to each come up with their own pledge and defend its wording.

But I don't think that was his intention, just guessing of course, but to use one of your expressions, he seems to be quite a toad.

You know dear, I tried as hard as possible to make the intent of my post just a possible suggestion, not the word of law according to Dreidel!

It was just a suggestion. I just find it doubtful that his motives were as academic as he claims, sorry, I do.

Not calling him an outright liar, just raising an inquisitive Spock eyebrow on the matter.

And yes, I am a college lecturer. I am molding the minds of some of America's future leaders. Think on that!

Your suggestion would be excellent - if I was trying to encourage "creative", rather than "critical" thinking - that was all I was saying..!

And you ARE a college lecturer??? Lawwwd - have mercy on those kids...

    Lecturer, not professor.

    Big difference.
