Default Is "Van Halen" the best ...

Debut album in rock & roll history? For my money it is.

Here are some other absolutely epic debut releases:

    "Led Zeppelin" - Led Zeppelin
    "Montrose" - Montrose
    "Boston" - "Boston"
"Appetite For Destruction" - Guns N' Roses
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"Political correctness is fascism pretending to be manners" - George Carlin

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

I've never understood the love for Montrose.

But to add one, The Cars.

Most bands would be thrilled to have that as their greatest hits album.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

not a bad call. very few bands sound so accomplished and completely formed on their debuts as VH did. most bands especially from the 60s/70s took a few albums to really hit their stride

agree with GnR - Appetite being a contender, and Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill is up there for me also...

    I can't think of a better one.

    Of course I'm biased.

    Some others that I like:

"ZZ Top's First Album" - ZZ Top
"Are You Experienced?" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
    "The Doors" - The Doors
"Texas Flood" - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I agree that Van Halen came almost "fully formed" out of the gates. This is uncommon. I also agree with maltiero that Pearl Jam's "Ten" was an example of a band who's debut sounded like it could have been their 3rd or 4th album. I mean that in a good way.

It must be in the very top. There are some other great ones listed but none were probably as earth shattering.

Pearl Jam is another great one

It's the album that smelled the most like pot.

    So...yes.
