Default Part of what's wrong for the last 20 years.

I rarely watch movies anymore, I just fell out of love with it, kind of like with music. It doesn't have the warmth it did 20+ years ago. Anyway I watched this movie called "The Giver" and it was about a society that basically wasn't allowed feelings or emotions and that made me start applying it to what I have seen in reality.

It occurred to me that Eddie Van Halen just stopped having or displaying emotion about 20 years ago.

I see it all around in society now.

How ironic that the following song came out 20 years ago next month ...

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

Eddie doesn't display emotion or feeling? I have a heard time buying that idea.
Not sure what that theory is based on.

Perhaps if Eddie and Alex never switched instruments, they would both show more emotion and play with other musicians.

Ed just had the shits of keeping a band together, touring, and the bs that goes with it after Balance. When you have his kind of money you can make that choice. As a fan I equate seeing VH live like going without sex for years then scoring with the best looking woman in the bar.

I completely disagree with the original poster. Ed has expressed a lot of emotion these past several years and lots of it good.

Folks, the rate at which music is release is not proportional to someone's health and happiness in the music business. How many times do I have to say it? It's clear Ed is at a different stage in his life and he is OK with releasing music far less frequently. He may just be wanting to be with family more.

And keep in mind, VH didn't release an album a year from 78 to 84 just because they were excited to and wanted to. They did it because they were contractually obligated to. Big difference.

I'll end by sayin what I always say. If I were Ed I wouldn't care one bit what fans thought about how much work I should be doing. It's not their life.

I do not agree at all, it's the opposite.

Eddie has expressed too much emotions during the last 20 years! And most of it, negative. The positive emotions of the 70s/80s have been replaced by a lot of negative things. You can't seriously say that VH is an ultra-professional, work-geared outfit running like a cold machine. Emotions have constantly dictated the way the band evolved, but the problem is that for the most part, Edward let negative emotions drive him and make terrible decisions during that time period.

I didn't mean in his personal life because I don't know him, I was talking about when he plays guitar. He used to get into it when he was onstage. 2004 was just going through the paces, and the last two tours it seems like he has no emotion to put into it onstage.

Now contrast that with the 5150 tour, the 1984 tour etc. etc.

Perhaps you should watch him receive Spike TV's Guitar God award a few years back, the guy almost started crying on tv.

I think Ed has shown allot of emotion in recent years. Obviously with being a proud father - as he should be.

I think what we do NOT see in the past 20 years is new music! Duh, right?

But specifically, new stuff. Used to always love to hear new music and the new sounds Ed would make. He always pioneered new sounds. He could reinvent himself / music while you always said "that's Eddie Van Halen!"..

Sadly, we don't have that anymore.. Like the tank is dry..
