    Default ATBL Electric Sitar overdubs

I was playing around with the isolated tracks in my Adobe Audition software today and I was able to pretty much isolate the Coral electric sitar overdubs on the two solos from "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". Each solo has two distinct sitar overdubs in each of the two solos-in other words, two sitar overdubs in the first solo and two sitar overdubs in the second solo...

Here is a clip I made with all the parts together and isolated as best as I could get it. I've always been able to hear these overdubs fairly well, but this is the clearest I've ever heard them...he was definitely doing something different than I thought he was doing because I always thought there was only one sitar track in each solo, but each solo has two sitar passes...

    Very cool
That's the clearest that I've ever heard those two sitar overdubs . Neat that you put them on here . I thought it was mainly the intro , that Ed doubled the guitar with the sitar ... oops !

Glad I could clear that up for you! It adds a real subtle thing to the solos, but it is awesome to really hear it. The Cherry Lane book has the sitar overdub transcribed incorrectly, but I don't blame them because they didn't have the isolated tracks to work with like I do. Now I just need to get an electric sitar! Just kidding...I can do without it, but I may record myself playing the overdub on my Danelectro DC-59 guitar which at least has the same pickups as the Coral Electric Sitar

That's cool- If I remember right didn't he say that he thought he was just playing a 'buzzy fretted guitar' when referring to the coral?
I used to be 'sean112' but lost all my details!

Yes...he said he didn't know if it was a Coral when he mentioned the overdub in an interview, but at the time he made the recording the Coral was really the only electric sitar out there. He has since found a Coral electric sitar which is hanging on a wall at 5150. The Coral electric sitar is actually a regular guitar with Danelectro lipstick pickups but it has a "buzzy" bridge that makes the well known buzzy sitar-like sound that most people know from Denny Dias' amazing solo on Steely Dan's "Do It Again".

Anyone who says they heard that all these years is lying.

That was cool. I just had to listen to the solo a half dozen times and I still can't really make that out. They really buried it in the mix.

Well I must say that I heard the basic overdub all along, but there are certain parts that were more buried to my ear.

The beginning of the overdub is simple...just doubling the melody of the Frankenstein...except the Frankenstein adds a little vibrato at the end of the melody with the tremolo arm and the sitar sustains the note with no vibrato.

The little overdubs that follow the melody in each solo are more buried to me. During this part of the first solo, I always thought he was just bending the note up and straight tremolo picking as he released the bend as the song progresses to the chorus. What surprised me was that he was NOT just tremolo picking, but rather doing an almost chicken picked combination of muting and straight picking as he releases the bend. As far as the part of the overdub that occurs after the melody in the second solo, I always heard it as just a bend with a slow release...hearing the isolated track just confirmed that for me.

It sure was fun to do detective work on a simple little part of an incredibly simple song that we've all heard a million times!

Yeah that's the part I meant. The end of the solo that stands out in your clip.

The early part that follows along with the Frankie is something I'm sure everyone could always hear.
