Default If Ed and Al never switched instruments

The speculation in the "last album" thread got me thinking. We know how much the story has been rehashed about Ed and Al switching instruments. However, what if they didn't? Would Van Halen still have existed in some form? Would the brothers still have made it in rock and roll or would they forever have been destined to be a bar band that only plays on the weekends or at weddings, etc?

These guys are talented musicians. We know that obviously it would have been different because Al would have been writing the music, not Ed, and we don't know what Al's writing would have sounded like. I would guess that they would still have the unique timing that only siblings or people who play together every day would have.

Would they still have been good enough to get singed to a major label and have a career in rock?

I'm going to guess that they would have made it, but probably had a shorter career because I think a lot of Van Halen's success is built around Ed's songwriting and that is something that is unique to him - I'm guessing Al just doesn't have that in him as most don't.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I would have to believe that even if they hadn't switched at an early age that once they did start to be in bands, possibly get in a studio, that Edwards talents on the guitar would have come out and likewise Al's timing would have been apparent. They are in the roles they were meant to be in. Timing is everything.

What if Al turned out to be the real guitar god?

Please, if there is a picture of Alex holding or playing Franky, post it! How great would that be if Alex got out from behind the kit and played something on guitar while Eddie played some drums, like Metallica used to do in the 90's?

I have seen a photo of Alex holding I believe the Kramer 5150. Probably a joke as he looks like he has no idea what to do with it.

    Sweet!

But why does Al have a Wolfgang tattoo on his arm?

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, would Van Halen give us something besides cole for Christmas?

If they never had switched instruments, Ed would have nothing to talk about in his interviews.

maybe Ed would've somehow revolutionized the drums. 'Eruption' would be a 1:42 drum solo, and every track would have amazing drums?

then on "5150" Al would start using a guitar synth, which would divide the fans

    Re: Songwriting

Even if Eddie had stuck with the drums...he still was a piano player. So it seems to me that he would still be writing songs for the band. (Like Don Henley with the Eagles)
