    Default Ed, Sam, or Dave?

I was listening to the Dan Patrick show today and they started arguing about whether one would rather be a great singer or a great guitar player. Inevitably Van Halen came up and the question was asked whether you would rather be EVH or DLR. EVH was selected by Dan and one of his co-hosts. Of course because this is Van Halen, it's never that simple. Then the question turned to whether you would rather be EVH or Sam. Dan said Sam (to a chorus of snickers), his co-host stuck with EVH.

So, who would you rather be? Ed, Sam, or Dave?

    My order would be

#1 Ed - Legendary musician. Revolutionized rock guitar playing. Will go down in the pantheon of all time greats.

#2 Dave - Legendary front man. Probably an underrated singer when he stays in his proper register. Good lyricist, but his schtick can get a little stale and can definitely turn people off. Still, in his hey day he was the poster child of rock n' roll.

#3 Sam. Blue collar hard workin' guy who got the most out of his career. Great singer, decent guitar player, mediocre lyricist. Probably the best business man of the three. Not really legendary in any sense of the word though.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

    Ed

Guitar virtuoso and legend, cool as hell, had the "look"
    It is what it is

I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said

They've all got world class talent. So I'll look at overall quality of life, which is the most important to me as a person (this will be different for people).

Dave my first choice. At least outwardly he seems to enjoy his life more than of any of them. I'd kill for an ounce of his energy and drive and sense of "let's do it!".

Sam. He's had some marital problems in the past. No thanks. Otherwise seems he likes his life.

Ed is a far far last on my list. Relationship problems and health problems for a good portion of his whole life. No thanks. All the stardom and talent in the world doesn't mean jack if you're depressed.

oh, and this is in regards to "who would you rather be". In regards to would you rather be a great singer or guitar player? Probably guitar player. My nature is a little introverted, so singer is out for me. Guitar I could do though. I know, I'm over analyzing!

Can I just be DLR for 1985, so he doesn't quit the greatest rock band in the world?
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

That was such a dark time. A serious "WTF?" moment. A great band stopped producing on that day. Respect to the new band that started up after it, but to me it was never the same. The magic was gone.

    I'd be Mike.

1/4 of the money, none of the fame, none of the burden.

Mike could shop in a Target and no one would know who he is. Sammy Hagar, DLR, or Ed could not.

Plus, Mike seems to be the most normal and happy, so there's that.

I would much rather be Eddie. He is a legend and even though he has diminishing skills compared to his younger days, it would be awesome to have his sense of timing. To play those VH songs the way I hear them in my head.

Regarding his relationship stuff, it appears he has a great relationship with his son and is still married to Wife number 2. Still is very friendly with his ex wife, enough to where they were at each others weddings. Extremely tight with his only living blood relative outside of Wolfgang. Seems that he has great relationships with the four people who know him the best. That matters more than ex-bandmates or people on a message board.

Plus all the musicians you meet because you are Eddie Van Halen. He can talk to Jimmy Page as a peer. Tony Iommi. People like Nuno look up to you. Warren DiMartini. Dweezil. George Lynch. Vai. Satch.

Who revers Dave or Sam? People on this board. Brett Michaels? Marq Torrien? The guy who sang in Tuff? Seriously different level of respect and fandom for those two guys than Eddie.

So yeah even with the messed up head, I would pick Eddie

Same here, which is probably why I picked up a guitar in the first place. Actually, I wanted to be a drummer (they're the furthest back from the crowd) but my parents wouldn't let me get a drum kit so I settled for a guitar instead.

There's no way I could get up there and sing and interact with the audience. Give me a couple of beers and a guitar where I don't have to say anything and I'm fine...

welll.......knowing what I know about Ed's health and issues he's had with booze and drugs I would probably not want to step into his shoes right now. He could be totally healthy at this point in his life but his past is gonna probably catch up with him sooneer or later.

Dave is a weird dude. you can say he's "eccentric" or whatever but he's a strange dude with some kind of hyper active disorder

Sam is a cool dude, he has a ton of cash, he has business's he runs, he's got a hot wife and he can do whatever he wants.

I'd go with Sam but that's just me.

Sammy Hagar, hands down. I would be a successful rock n' roll front-man, who has amazing pipes, can hold my own on guitar, is cool as fuck and rich as a bitch.

Alternatives: a legendary rock God who nearly destroyed his life, or a wash-up, balding clown who amounted to nothing without Van Halen.

I'm surprised some so-called Dave "fans" would want to be him, after he's admitted to being depressed for a big chunk of his life. Most of the time his only companion is his dog. Sure he's a legend, but being him must be tough.

    This.

I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't the most wealthy of them all too. No divorce, no addictions (as far as we know)
