Default EDDIE VAN HALEN TO Help Launch Smithsonian/Zocalo Initiative

Hope this is not the special 18 month project

The Smithsonian's National Museum Of American History and Los Angeles-based Ideas Exchange Zocalo Public Square are partnering to launch "What It Means To Be American", a collaborative three-year initiative aimed at engaging leading thinkers, public figures and Americans from all walks of life to explore how the United States became the nation it is today. The kick-off event January 14 will feature former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Anna Maria Chavez, CEO of the Girl Scouts Of The USA, at the Heard Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate in Phoenix. Music icon Eddie Van Halen will headline the next event at the National Museum Of American History in February.

The initiative will foster a national conversation through a series of free public events across the U.S. The first event, "The Women Of The West", features native Arizonans — O'Connor and Chavez — discussing what it means to be a Western woman and what particular opportunities the region has offered women. A question-and-answer session will follow the moderated discussion, allowing audience members to further engage with one another and the speakers to continue the conversation.

That's cool. I wonder how the heck he got involved in something like this? He must know someone that is calling in a favor or something. I wonder if by "headlining" they mean he will actually play something on stage?

I wonder if this somehow stems from his donation of the Frank 2 in 2011. If so, his presentation could definitely include him talking about how he created it and playing it a bit to show it in action. Nice to see him slowly emerging from his couch.

He had also done an interview with them about it at the time...

Weird because I've never even heard EVH define himself as an "American." Van Halen the band, yes. But he himself, I don't think so. Very much something out of left field, but who knows, maybe it could be something new and creative. This is something you'd more readily associate DLR with, but these days EVH's profile is higher, I guess.

He is probably speaking about becoming an American and taking the American Dream by the reins and rising to the top. We all know the story of coming over with $12 and a piano and paying their way by playing on the ship...but not everyone knows. Edward and Alex are the American Dream. Poor immigrant kids who only had each other and music who became rich and famous. Not to mention being a founding member of one of the greatest (greatest IMO) American Rock bands.

Glad Ed is keeping himself busy.

Well, Ed and Al pretty much define "American" at least in terms of the opportunity that this country afforded them that they likely wouldn't have had in Holland.

They came here poor, didn't speak English, worked hard, started a rock band and became rich and famous. If that ain't American I don't know what is.

As for DLR, I agree with your point except that he was the son of a wealthy surgeon who was born in Indiana. Not that this is not American as well, but I do think Ed and Al's story is probably a bit more interesting from a historical point of view.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I checked the calendar at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History website, but can't find anything about Ed appearing.

Hope he tells the story about how he and his family didn't crawl over the border and chose to immigrate to the United States legally and lawfully to take part in the great American dream. What a story he has to tell to future legal immigrants of the United States of America!

We'll find out afterwards it was actually the Beach Boys that were supposed to appear.
