Default Buenos Aires 2/11/83 -- absolutely sublime

Last night, I was slightly bored, GF was having a ladies night out, and I was in a VH mood. So, I actually went rifling through some old VHS tapes (yep, still have a player and a LOT of tapes) and pulled out the February 11, 1983 Buenos Aires, Argentina show solely on a whim.

Once I put it in, I realized it has been several years since I watched it -- I can't even say how many, more than five for sure. Even just from the very, very beginning, I realized that the show is a CVH concert movie. This is the kind of stuff that should be released, but anyway...

This was the one show of all of VH's career where Ed played on stage right instead of stage left. I have never heard a good explanation for this and just assume that he wanted to change it up a bit. Also, Ed plays his "Kramer Ad Frank Replica" guitar for the entire show -- and that guitar sounded great.

The opening "Romeo Delight" is just a tad rough -- actually Dave completely blanked out the second verse and didn't cover it well. But that's the equivalent of hitting a pebble on a 1,000-mile journey. They go straight into "Unchained" -- the performance is BETTER than Oakland, period.

As the set progresses, it becomes more and more sublime. It's the perfect show. They were amazing. It is far better than the US Festival or any of the other South American videos.

I would think lots of y'all would already have this at home in your archives, and probably on DVD too and not VHS like me. If you don't -- stop what you're doing and make it a sincere goal of yours to track this show down. It sure makes up for all of the current silence/confusion.

I think I may watch it again tonight. Sincerely, it's one of the best ever CVH performances ever captured IMHO.

i have 1-16-83 Caracas, VZ and 1-21-83 Sao Paulo, Brazil. just watched Romeo and Unchained from Caracas. Dave held his cape like a Matador while Mike ran through it. Awesome stuff. Glad you brought this subject up.

Here's the beginning of Buenos Aires. "Romeo Delight" does NOT suck, but it's not as great as "Unchained" which follows. The drum solo follows "Unchained" -- which I tend to skip over.

Seriously, this version of "Unchained" is damn near impossible to top. I love the Caracas, Sao Paulo, and Rio shows, but Buenos Aires, Argentina was the shit.

The versions of "Dancin' in the Streets," "Little Guitars," and "So This Is Love?" are OFF THE CHARTS. The best VH live footage and/or performances you could ever hope for.

Then, ASTOUNDINGLY, Mike and Ed and Alex play a drum solo that is simply unbelievable. To watch Ed bash away on percussion next to his brother is priceless stuff, man.

They also played "Summertime Blues" -- just kick ass. Dave's "Ode to Argentina" and the crowd's reaction...that is what pure magic is. Ed's solo is one of his very best -- and the Kramer Ad Frank Replica Guitar is just the freakin' coolest.

Just watched the Caracas show again, it IS great. But I wonder if they would fix and remaster shows where Dave is addressing the audience in Spanish for their (mostly) English speaking audience. I doubt it.

To each his own, Kevin, but there's no way I can put that Unchained ahead of Oakland. I think Oakland blows it away.

VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

The version of this Buenos Aires show uploaded by 80srockconcerts on YouTube looks like a very low generation copy. It's excellent at least on my phone.

As I understand it was one of the first shows down there and what happened was the local stadium crew set up the stage wrong before VH found out there wasn't enough time to fix it so they went ahead and did the show anyways.
