Default VH could learn from AC/DC how to treat fans

“Why are AC/DC fans loyal to AC/DC?”, asks Mallett. “Because AC/Dc are loyal to the fans".

I ran across that quote while learning more about the new AC/DC album. They had a nice write up at Hennemusic.com about the bands recent video shoot.

Sums it up for me... I keep coming back to VH because their music was so damn powerful through both Dave & Sammy years. Even Gary live was good..

ADKOT was great and Ed healthy is great.

    The past 2 tours.. Eh..
    Stage shows... Eh..
    Dave.. ugh

These days it's very, very hard... Yes i'm whining and just about done..

But release something and i'm sure i will be right there buying it! But undoubtedly the least fan friendly band in rock.

They could learn from just about any other band.

They were a bit secret about Malcolms stroke at first. Their all private but VH is so private since Balance to the point of insanity.

Waiting and waiting to hear something does get very frustrating for sure! I can understand VH wanting to be private, but they do have an obligation to inform their fans on what's going on. If the timeline Dave spoke of is still on? We should hope to hear from them soon... Hopefully! I am getting a bit restless!

VH could learn from many bands, Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin come to mind.

as was pointed out (possibly by myself) in a recent thread, ACDC have released 3 studio albums since 1995 and so have VH.

okay so DC are about to make that 4, while VH reside in some kind of curious limbo, but do all the DVDs and merch released by DC during the quiet periods and the 'keeping in contact with the fans' interviews/press releases mean anything to me? not really. Im a massive fan, but based solely on the music/albums. same with VH

Everybody's different, you're right. True, AC/DC also doesn't release studio albums very often either, but they're far more communicative and they've released all kinds of archive stuff and modern live dvds as you've said. That matters to some fans and not to others. But even then there are tons of bands (including the older ones) that do it better than AC/DC, too. Most of the major older metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and a few non-metal bands like Rush and Deep Purple and Yes, release something virtually every year whether they're "active" that year or not. Hell, even The Who still releases something almost every year. But I also think those bands, being much farther outside the mainstream than VH, simply have a different relationship with their fans. For tons of those fans following those bands is a full time hobby.

There is no comparison. AC/DC has released pretty much the same album since the early 80's. They have made more $$$ off three chords than any other rock band in history. Angus does not design guitars/amps/effects under a licensed entity of FMIC. He plays one scale really good, and they sell a lot of T-shirts at Wal-Mart. I will take ADKOT, which I consider an average VH release at best over everything AC/DC has put out in the last 20 years. 2 different bands. I would never want VH to go the Wal-Mart route.

Why would anyone rip on ACDC? Really? They're legends and it's cool they still want to make music. And Angus does have his own signature SG's. I have one. And Angus is a great player. He's not Ed but so what. He smokes.

agreed - although in fact I would say that every ACDC album has its own sound to an extent. even just in the Brian era take Flick Of The Switch, Razors Edge, and Stiff Upper Lip - all 3 sound pretty different from each other IMO. I guess to a non-fan they might all sound more or less the same

Yeah, you're right. I was just playing along. It's a terrible case of being damned if you do or don't. When many bands like VH, Rush, Judas Priest, and others go outside what they're "supposed to do" they get bashed, and when ACDC keeps the same overall sound and style they also get bashed.

Everybody can be stereotyped to a certain degree, especially by non-fans and some casual fans. I've known people to say basically the same thing about Eddie, that all he does is the same hammer-on stuff over and over. Well, I guess if you just don't listen closely or want to slam him it might sound like that, but it's just not the case.

AC/DC - solid. They do seem to face drama in a more mature way than VH does.

I was able to attend the playback party in NYC on Tuesday to preview AC/DC's new album, "Rock or Bust". Admission to Webster Hall was free, and everyone got a free t-shirt and free beer. (Bud Light) They played the entire new album and then Brian Johnson and Angus Young made a quick appearance before introducing the new video. It was a blast, and a great way to treat fans.
