Default Geddy Lee answers two VH-related questions in Rolling Stone

Geddy answered questions from Twitter today on Rolling Stone:

Did Eddie Van Halen really pour a beer into your tape recorder in 1980? What's the story with that?

Oh, that's an interesting memory. We were at a hotel bar in Leicester and one of the guys in our road crew had his beat box playing. And the guys in Van Halen were a little inebriated and we were on our way to getting inebriated. So I think some beer was spilt, yes.

Do you prefer Van Halen with Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth?

    I don't listen to either.

    Yikes!

Why would Geddy Lee listen to Van Halen? Great answer. I love it.

Obviously he's a Cherone fan, haha!

Yeah, I'm not surprised. His focus is more heavy duty lyrics and bass heavy music, not exactly what VH is known for.

By the way, I just got the new R40 package in today. What an awesome collection. The big ol' coffee table book is great and the 1997 footage is beyond excellent! Worth the price alone.

After years and years, with millions upon millions of people, the Dave vs. Sammy debate was finally put to rest.....by Geddy Lee.

I am debating whether to get it since I already own all of the disks, save for bonus stuff. It sort of hoses the die hards by making us buy stuff we already own.

I really wish this didn't happen between these guys, it's kind of like Spiderman fighting with Superman.

I understand. Not trying to talk you into or out of it but just some things to consider while you're debating:

If you do get it get it from either the official Rush store or (much easier and cheaper) get it at Best Buy. I had to order mine from Best Buy because I'm in a small town and the one near me doesn't carry it but the ones in the larger cities do. Shipping was free and it took only three days. Best Buy has it for $99 right now and only those two stores are selling the completest version. So if you get R40 on dvd the completist disk gets you the 8 songs that were cut from the R30 show and were later restored on the R30 bluray. But if you get the R40 bluray the completist disk gives you all the stuff that was on the R30 archive disk that wasn't with the original bluray. Essentially the completist version makes sure you end up with all the R30 content regardless of which one you get. In either version, the completist disk also gets you three more songs from 1997 which are awesome. If you want to see some 1997 footage go check my post from last night on the Rush thread.

The quality of the package is awesome. Big heavy coffee table book containing everything.

A few other things to note (which you may already know). Some people are getting more content than they thought. For instance, a lot of people own the Rio dvd but for many years only the single disk edition has been available without the documentary. This has it. Also, you'll also be getting more content from R30 unless you had already bought both the R30 deluxe version and the R30 bluray (which I had). Also, I can't tell because I still have a giant 4:3 TV but I've heard that Rio on R40 is now anamorphic, or at least it appears that way.

Factor $99 for the uber edition at Best Buy, the extra R30 content (for some) and the improved Rio display, a high quality book that would easily be $20-$25 on its own, the 2 and a half hours or so of unreleased content, and the fact that at least in my town I can sell my old blurays if I wanted (I'm not) at a resale store for about $4 a piece so that like a $20 rebate and it's not nearly as bad as it first seemed.

Maybe I did try to talk you into it, haha! It'll be worth it to some and not to others, just consider what I wrote to see if maybe you're getting more than you thought you were.

I doubt they really have any hard feelings over it. It was a long time ago and they were all drunk (or close) and I'm sure both bands had far worse experiences with other bands than that. Hell, there's a story that Joan Jett pissed on Rush's guitars or amps or something when she was with The Runaways, haha! Makes a little beer seem not so bad!

VAN HALEN GETS EVEN WITH EVERYONE:
    GEDDY LEE VS. THE VISIGOTHS

BY J. KORDOSH, CREEM, OCTOBER 1981

David Lee Roth: Do you want to tell a Rush story?

Alex Van Halen: It's our turn!

David Lee Roth: OK, guys, I hope you read this issue!

    - True Stuff, July 4,1981

"We gonna go back in time now - back a year's time to Leicester, England. You're gonna have to look that up; it's spelled with an 'ie' or something. We'd just finished playing: great show, everybody's very up it was Michael's (bassist Anthony) birthday. And we'd come back to the bar and Rush was staying at the same hotel. And as it turns out later - they'd rented the bar with all the booze in it. And our guys didn't know that and they came in and said, 'What, free booze?! Whoa!!' And they cleaned the place out, which put their guys on edge a little bit. And Edward was sitting at the table with Geddy Lee and they'd both been drinking a little bit, and Geddy was playing some Rush tapes on a tape recorder. He said something to Ed and Ed's beer got into the tape recorder," Roth laughed, obviously relishing his role as gossip monger. "Well that caused a little friction," he continued. Jump ahead one year - Las Vegas ( not L.A.) 1981. Rush is playing before Van Halen in Las Vegas and word goes out: nobody from Van Halen is allowed into the show at all. Nobody. No road crew, nobody.

"Is it true?" I interrupted. "Just because he spilled his beer?"

Roth considered the question. "Well, the whole beer went went into the tape recorder," he and Van Halen laughed.

"Yeah, but how much could it've cost??"

"Well, the glass, too!" he roared. OK, I get it.

"Anyways: 1981. The word goes out that nobody remotely associated with Van Halen is allowed into the show. As it turns out, a lot of our truckers - we've got five or six trucks, gotta have people to driv'em they know other truckers and they know the guys in Rush. And they say, 'Hey c'mon over, have a beer and a buzz, you're welcome at our show anytime, and so on. And so late word goes out: some Van Halen people - some - will be allowed into the show. And they've got some great guys working for them. So the show goes on and everything" We jump ahead now. After the show, we're sitting in this casino. There's tables filled with Van Halen people - there's 47 or 50 of us on the road now. And Geddy feels one way or another and comes up to say something to Ed, and he puts up his hand to shake hands. Now one of our security guards didn't have the vaguest idea in hell who he was and he came up and bodytackled him. Ha, ha, ha. Threw him out of the table and that's the last I saw of 'em!" He ended with a good - natured laugh.
" On a scale that ranges from deep dark depression to rip roaring fun ... most people idle between pissed off ...and not too pissed off " DLR 1997

" I am the danger ... I am the one who knocks " Walter White 2011
