Default Jerry Cantrell on Eddie Van Halen: 'There's Nobody Like Him'

ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell took over the airwaves earlier today (Wednesday, November 12) on the KLOS 95.5 FM radio station in Los Angeles, California as a guest DJ with Melissa Maxx. You can watch video footage of his appearance in five parts below.

Speaking about VAN HALEN, Cantrell said: "Eddie Van Halen, for me… As a guitar player, there's a handful of guys that are the pinnacle, and Eddie's always been that for me. And for a lot of [other] guys. Just completely unique, untouchable… There's nobody like him."

He continued: "We had an opportunity on our first record to tour with VAN HALEN for about six months… They kept us on for a couple of legs or whatever. I remember the very first show we played, we flew in and I think we were late to the stage. I got up there and we were getting our gear together, and I hadn't met him yet. So I get my guitar on and we're getting ready to go, and I turn around and Eddie's standing there with his guitar, and he's, like, in my guitar pit. And he's sitting there warming up, like, waving, 'Hey, dude, what's up?' And I'm, like, 'Oh, man.' It was, like, 'Go away. Don't stand that close to me, man. Don't listen to how crappy I am.' It's, like, I've got Eddie Van Halen standing, like, six feet from me and getting ready to go play. I was extremely nervous. But it was one of the coolest tours and a really big break for us early on, and it got us experience at kind of a big level, and they took us under their wing."

Didn't know he was a hardcore Ed fan. Good stuff!

I would say there's not many like Jerry, either. He's a pretty unique player in his own right.

Alice In Chains started out as a hair metal type band, so it's not that surprising

If I can remember correctly, Jerry came home after the tour and his garage was filled with amps, guitars from Peavey. Courtesy of Eddie

That's the story I heard too. I also heard one of the Peavey Wolfgangs was later stolen.

Here's a couple VHND stories on Jerry Cantrell:

Jerry Cantrell Recounts Van Halen VS Alice In Chains Prank Battle

Pearl Jam & Alice In Chains Attend Van Halen Show

And here's a couple more EVH-related quotes from Jerry Cantrell from previous Guitar World interviews.

That picture on the prank one is fucking hilarious. Would've been cool to be at that show.

I like Jerry Cantrell and his music and playing. He was the one "grunge" guy that I could get into because he could still solo and write good riffs. He's far better than Cobain. We actually used to do some AIC tunes back in the day to stay "current" with our covers and I could stomach playing them because of Jerry's playing.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

cobain wasn't a technical player but he could solo. the solo to In Bloom is shit hot. and dare I say it the solo to Serve The Servants is almost EVH-esque, in a scrappy kinda way (yes really). IMO

I'm not surprised. I knew he was a fan. I just didn't know it was that extensive.

If you hear it, that's cool because I certainly don't. A lot of guys in grunge and the bands that followed were huge EVH fans. Just wasn't cool to admit it at the time. Jerry, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard,Tom Morello, Rivers Cuomo and Billy Corgan I know loved Eddie. I think even Billie Armstrong was a fan.

Anyway people think that VH didn't have any influence beyond the hair metal bands but that's not true. If they influenced all these guys, they it carried on. Sort of like how you don't hear Clapton with Eddie but he was a huge influence.
