    Default 5150 Neck

It looks like Eddie's 5150 neck isn't finished at all, seeing as though it is so stained. It looks like there isn't even oil possibly? You don't often see necks this "dirty" which makes me wonder if it is just raw?

Ed has said many times that he prefers no finish on his personal necks and the 5150 is no exception.

What about the fretboard though? His others don't look as stained as the 5150 did by the late 80s

I think there was finish on that one that he tried scraping off but stopped before he removed it all.

    Look at that thing.

All I can say is it looks cool. As far as playability and endurance of the actual neck itself, probably not so great, but that's Ed's call.

Also, the 13th fret apparently never saw too much action.

...I was just going to comment on Ed's lack of love for those A/F/D#/G# notes mid-neck...

I would think those necks would be even better with a good refret or level and recrown. Wood only gets better with wear, sweat and skin oil.

I heard that the original neck was finished and Eddie shaved off some of the finish on the fret board.

That's why it looked dirty in places and not others,

There was still finish on some of it.

It's since been refretted and is totally finish free now.

I've never heard this...do you have an interview or source for this? I've never even heard a rumour of this...

Of course the 5150 neck is painted now, at least as of the 'No Bozos' pictures. I wouldn't say it was "finish free" if the fretboard is painted.

A friend told me and he's talked to Unkert.

No that striped neck isn't the original, that was another neck, the original is back on the 5150 now and it's been totally cleaned.

Who makes the best replica of the 5150 neck? I've looked at a few but a lot seem to either have an angled headstock or a questionable shape to start.
I used to be 'sean112' but lost all my details!

Must be because the 1st fret is about as clean as the 13th and you know that fret got abused pretty good.

Pretty unbelievable how filthy that neck is.

I've done the same with my Ernie Ball Axis unfinished neck and it gets better and better over time.
Lets just throw a pound of weed in the fire place, f@#% it!
