Default How many Albums would VH have IF..

    .....

    1. Eddie is more laid back and Dave goes off and makes his EP, and they have some time away but come back and do a Genesis style thing...Dave keeps doing VH albums...come back and instead of Eat Em and Smile and 5150 we have the hybrid son of those two albums released in 1986 or whatever....how many albums do we have now? Do they break up anyway after Nirvana because Dave would have to re-invent his persona a bit...as he finally did after getting a little weird. Do they kind of fall into the AC DC pattern or Metallica....

    2. Eddie is more laid back and they all take time off after the Twister soundtrack and do more albums with Sammy and they become BROTHERS again. How many albums do they put out? Do the falling sales of rock music cause them to stop anyway? Or could they have had enough fun they put out a CD every 2 years and tour?

I just wonder how many Van Halen albums "could have been" and what they would be like. Sort of like Fantasy Booking in Wrestling.

Both Dave and Sammy have different, quirky personalities, but they both work....I think Dave wants to go go go go right now and Sammy would have too.

    1. Dave left.
    2. Had eddie not gone all apeshit and Ray Daniels was never in the picture then yes I see them continuing as they were. Sammy still had music and eddie did too. I imagine at some point they would have hit a lull but who knows.

I don't think it would have matter if it was Ray Daniels or someone else. Sounds like once Leffler died that a power struggle started and someone was gonna win (Sam or the brothers) with the new manager choice. And eventually that was gonna explode. I think Daniels is just somone we can point at. The issue was that the brothers didn't want Sam leading the team anymore.

As for the actual topic, i think had they not split in 84 that we would have gotten a few more Dave albums but at some point they would have imploded. I think the best chance at multiple albums post the Sammy break was with Gary and he was laid back and more likely to tolerate Ed. But money/label got in the way of that.

easier dealing with 3 guys who like each other then with a band who want to kill each other?

VH didn't need a manager when they hired a Ray, they needed a team of therapists.

I think the preface for the 1st 2 questions would be more relevant if they read...

If Eddie was sober... rather than Eddie is more laid back...

But for the sake of accuracy the first question would have been more applicable if it started with If Dave was more laid back...

No matter... all that is just mental masturbation and history has already been written and cast in stone.

If any of them had different personalities the music would have been different. They have said themselves that the conflict was what drove some of the quality of music to be as good as it was.

Dave would have never lasted in VH with his personality. He needed to go out and fail a couple times to realize that it isn't always about him.

Conversely, Ed needed to go out and fail a couple of times to realize that it isn't all about him.

In the end we end up with this current hybrid formation, but the main ingredients of Dave and Ed are at least able to work together because they both realize that they can't do it as well without the other one. In the process, we've had two great eras with different kinds of music. Now we've got the Mach 4 lineup that has given us some good live shows and an incredible CD.

Irving Azoff would have been perfect after leffler. He's very good at ego containment and knowing what to do. He's a very smart guy. All I gotta say is the Eagles. Those guys hate each other. There's more animosity in that band than VH could produce. Ask Don Felder.

If Dave stayed and Ed stayed healthy? I'd say probably two more records than we have now. Early on, the order woulda went much like how it went with Sam.'86, 88, 91. Once in to the 90's I don't see records coming every two years. Probably every three, or four sometimes.

I'd say one more in the 90's and one more in the '00's.

That's what I was implying. Then he failed with the 2004 tour reunion and new songs.

When Ed had success with Sam, I think it grew his ego even more because he figured he could place anyone in front of the microphone and he would still be successful.

ed and dave were eventually going to start having issues with each other no matter what. even if ed had said "yeah, go do CFTH" eventually thier ego's would have driven them apart. I would say that they maybe could have put out 1 additional album with Dave.

Now Sam and Ed are different. I think they had issues but I think those problems were exhasberated (sp) by Ray Daniels. Had another manager been around or had Lefler not gotten sick they could have put out a few more with Sam, maybe 4-5 and then who knows?

I could be totally wrong but that's what I think.

I don't think Van Halen would of lasted more than 1 more album with Dave, just form watching some shows from the 1984 albums, they were hardly on stage together at one time, the shows seemed very disorganized and it seemed like things had fallen apart and they were just going through the motions.

When Sam came on board he brought Ed Lefler with him and it sounds like he really got this band together, he sorted out their fiancees and he kept their egos in check, once he died there was no one there to reassure band members and Ray Daniels only fueled those flames, i think if they had of gone with a more professional manager that knows how to manage their egos they would of had a couple more albums, but the thing with Van Halen, they produce their best material when there is tension, so i don't think we would of got albums like Balance and Humans Being, so we would of got more Van Halen, but the quality wouldn't have been there.

    Just my thoughts.
