Default Soldier killed in Montreal in alleged terrorist attack

Proof that the American media doesn't much care about Canada. One of the soldiers in this attack died this morning.

There are “clear indications” that a 25-year old man who injured two Canadian soldiers in a hit-and-run Monday near Montreal “had become radicalized,” the Prime Minister’s Office says.

Police shot a driver after he ran over two Canadian soldiers in a mall parking lot, Quebec provincial police said. The driver died a few hours later.

One of the two soldiers was seriously injured.

“We fear for his life,” said Sgt. Joyce Kemp with Sûreté du Québec. The other soldier sustained minor injuries, she said.

The government issued a statement Monday night saying Prime Minister Stephen Harper had been briefed by RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson, and National Security Adviser Stephen Rigby.

“The individual who struck the two CAF members with his car is known to federal authorities, including the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team,” said the statement from Jason MacDonald, the prime minister’s spokesman.

“Federal authorities have confirmed that there are clear indications that the individual had become radicalized. As Canada’s national security agencies have said, Canadians should remain vigilant.”

Earlier, during question period in the House of Commons, Conservative MP Randy Hoback referenced what he called “unconfirmed reports” of a “possible terror attack,” and asked Prime Minister Harper for an update on the situation.

“We are aware of these reports,” Harper replied. “They’re obviously extremely troubling … We’re closely monitoring the situation and obviously we will make available all of the resources of the federal government.”

Asked about Mr. Hoback’s assertion, the Sûrété du Québec said it could not confirm whether the attack on the soldiers was targeted. Sgt. Kemp could not confirm whether the soldiers were in uniform when they were struck.

Sûreté du Québec spokesman Lieut. Guy Lapointe said it is too early to determine whether the military personnel were deliberately targeted. “All I can say is that the theory that this is a deliberate act is part of what we’ll be looking at,” he said. “But it’s really too early to speculate at this point.”

Neither Harper nor Hoback indicated who was reporting that the hit-and-run was a possible terrorist attack. Reached after question period, Hoback had no comment; Harper’s office did not respond to repeated questions.

What do radical muslims really have to hate about Canadians, they're too civil to the rest of the world?

we're part of the coalition so isis doesn't like us either. Not that this guy was an isis trained fighter, sounds like he's never left the province of Quebec and no one is certain if this was a planned attack. One of the guys on the radio was like "well we need to interview this guy to find out his motives". Great thinking if you overlook the fact that the cops filled him up with bullets so he won't be talking now or at any time in the future.

You're probably right. But the people of America care. I do. North America sticks together. Except Mexico. No one cares.

American media, by and large, doesn't even care when American soldiers are killed in Afghanistan. American soldiers still die over there from time to time, but it's a very minor item these days. It certainly doesn't lead off the evening news the way it did at CBS when the running total of Americans killed in Iraq was a number held near and dear to the political left.

I believe it is a product of politics within the media, as well as no small amount of apathy among the American public.

Our media barely gives a passing glance to the issue of treating radicalized assailants as criminals rather than jihadists. Ft. Hood, for example. We recently had a general killed in Afghanistan, and it was in the news for about one day. POTUS didn't even attend the funeral, which I find completely insulting.

So no, sad as it is, a terror or jihad-related event in Canada really doesn't stand a chance in our media coverage.

pretty scary stuff and really goes to show you one of the issues with living in a free society is that we're at the mercy of each other. The govt knew this guy was a radical nut, stopped him travelling to Turkey out of fear he'd join ISIS but until one commits a crime you can't hold him forever.

Authorities are trying to figure out what motivated Martin Couture-Rouleau to drive his car into two soldiers, killing one of them, in St. Jean sur Richelieu Monday.

Couture-Rouleau converted to Islam less than two years ago, and neighbours said he went to nearby Al Iman Mosque three to four times a week to pray.

The president of the Haut-Richelieu Muslim Association chose not speak to CTV Montreal on the matter, but did confirm Couture-Rouleau attended the mosque. He said they exchanged few words.
Couture-Rouleau and his wife had split up after having a child together. His social media profile shows frustration with the beliefs of atheists and Christians.

Couture-Rouleau never made any posts on Twitter but he did follow a number of radical Islamists, using the ISIS emblem on the account.

His posts on Facebook came to a halt in May, except for a final post on Oct. 17 when he changed his profile to an image of two open doors, one leading to a sky full of clouds and the other to people burning in fire.

A woman who did not want to be identified said she attended high school with Rouleau at Polyvalente Chanoine-Armand-Racicot and was shocked to see his photo on the news.

“It was weird to see someone I knew in high school turning into a radicalized Muslim,” she said. “He was super polite and nice. In high school he was very normal, from a normal family.”

The Surete du Quebec has determined that Couture-Rouleau intended to attack the military in some fashion, and was sitting in the parking lot outside a military office for more than two hours before he ran down Patrice Vincent and another soldier.

"What I can say is right now, the working thesis is that it's a deliberate act. With regards to how it was planned, it's really hard to say. The investigation is starting, we're going to stick to the facts," said Lt. Guy Lapointe of the SQ.
Couture-Rouleau converted to Islam in 2013, and according to RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson, "He was one of about 90 people who were under investigation" by Mounties.

At this point police do not believe that Couture-Rouleau was operating with anyone else, but Paulson confirmed that authorities revoked Couture-Rouleau's passport several weeks ago out of the fear he would go overseas to join radical Islamists.

Paulson said investigators would try to determine if removing his travel privileges prompted Couture-Rouleau's random attack.

The RCMP confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Couture-Rouleau’s family noticed a change in him last year and consulted authorities. The RCMP began to investigate Rouleau in June and arrested him July, revoking his passport after he attempted to travel to Turkey. The RCMP released him without enough evidence to charge him for any crime.

Radicalized thoughts are not a crime in Canada, said the RCMP.

They last met with Couture-Rouleau on Oct. 9, but still found it impossible to predict the terrorist act, because he acted alone, and the weapon in this matter was a car.

Former CSIS agent Michel Juneau-Katsuya said about "13,000 young westerners have been recruited via the internet and radicalized this way."
According to the security analyst, there are "130 young Canadians abroad which have joined terrorist groups including ISIS. Eighty young people have returned from Syria and Iraq and have been with ISIS for a certain period of time."

I think psychopaths are just using radical Islam as an excuse to be psychopaths. Why else would a westerner, not raised a Muslim, want to join such a group? I'm sure the good Muslims are thrilled.

I remember when the media would open every news cast with the number of American troop deaths during the Bush admin.
