Default Have we discussed the 5150 III 50w head yet?

I LOVE my 100w 5150 III, except I cannot stand lugging it around everywhere. It's just so big and bulky and one of my bands practices on the second floor of the drummer's house, so it's a miserable stair climb with that head on one of my shoulders. Its bulk and weight have made me want a 50w.

A local guy has one for sale and I got him to agree to let me come try it out, even though I told him I was a total tire kicker at this point. The volume drop was no issue at all for me. But the green and blue channels sharing the same gain knob was a problem. I use about 25% gain on green and 100% on blue, so there's not much room for compromise there. But man, the size and weight are soooo tempting.

Today I was at the local GC and they had one in their boutique room plugged into a Friedman 2x12. I decided to give it another try. Gain was on about 60% and sounded just fine this time between green and blue. I tried two Charvels, both of which had EMGs. I don't really need crystal clear Twin Reverb-like cleans, but I need it clean once in a while. This encounter today has me reconsidering, especially since I have a local guy interested in my 100w.

Have any of you guys bounced between the 100w and 50w versions? How did you deal with the differences between the two, other than have a lot less back ache? Oh, also, I sometimes run a full stack, so two 4x12s. Will the 50w version struggle to keep up with that?

Well, I traded my 100w today for a 50w and $350. I think the volume jump is going to be an issue on Hear About It Later, but that's one of the few VH songs with a real clean part, so I'll figure something out. I will probably have to keep the green loud on that and then go right to red when it kicks in. I'll try it at band practice tomorrow and then side by side with my SLO when we do a full equipment practice in a big space next weekend.

you are making it too complicated. the blue channel is much better. just roll off the volume and you will be fine. pretty sure you will stay on the blue 90% of the time. its cool. even for the cleaner parts. set it for the blue and work around that. FWIW. you don't even need the red as much

Hard to believe that Ed did all that with the gear he had at the time !

It will easliy push (2) 4x12s. I do it all the time with the 50w version.

I have my first band practice with this head tonight, but only have a 2x12 at the practice space. We should be doing a full space rehearsal for a gig in another week or so and then I'll bring both 4x12s. I was playing through them at home, though, and they sound great.
