    Default The 1981 thread

I've realized recently that 1981 was when the band was absolutely at their best. Fair Warning is absolutely my favorite album, and it seems like more and more audio, video, and photos are popping up. I've gone digging on youtube and have come across several excellent finds.

The "Rude" guitar from the Fair Warning tour is also just about my favorite of all of his early guitars.

This is the last hour of audio of the Greensboro show from August 25, 1981 -- the audio quality is superb, absolutely great. Dave calls Ed "Superman" during "Everybody Wants Some"!

    1981 RULES!

I always had 1981 as VH's best year too and a Fair Warning tour show was my dream VH show. The Oakland videos sell that year so well. But about a year ago I may have changed my mind to 1979. Because they weren't quite "there" yet there's a certain fire and passion I see and hear in the '79 stuff that makes me think that was the best year you could have seen them in concert.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

    You've just recently realized ?!!
    :-)

I agree 1981 was their finest rise to greatness. Album + Tour. Can't beat 1981 Van Halen.

1978 obviously groundbreaking out of the gate
1979 first headlining tour. Getting bigger. Like DD said on the rise but not quite there.
1980 getting bigger. Playing arenas, etc
1981 total raw power. Multiple nights in same city, etc..

As special as that year was for me as it was my first Van Halen concert, you don't think they played a little too slow that tour and Eddie overdid the "wah" that tour? It was awesome no doubt, but their best?

81 looked like it was great, but my vote is the 5150 tour. Energy, a lot to prove firing on all cylinders. Just awesome

My opinion of course, too each their own

I was listening to The Cars and Talking Heads in 1981... and Blondie and Dire Straits.
